I've been playing pool, on and off, for over 45 years, but I have never had a custom cue maker fashion a cue for me. I once owned a Mike Capone cue, but I bought it from Mike already finished. Dan Janes once made a cue for me in return for a favor, but I only specified the weight and shaft size. So as I approached my 66th birthday, I thought maybe it's about time I had a cue made for myself. Not so I can play better, I am past that fantasy. Not to show off to the guys at the pool hall and not as an investment. I just wanted the experience of working with a cue maker, telling him just what I wanted, down to the veneers to use. I wanted to look over his stock of curly maple and cocobolo and pick out the pieces for my cue. I am lucky enough to live near a cue maker (Dick Neighbors), so I was able to go over to his shop and talk about what I wanted in a cue. The cue is in process as I write and I am looking forward to seeing the finished product.
So here's the deal - if you have been thinking about having a cue maker build a cue for you, and you have a few spare bucks lying around, I encourage you to go for it! Life is to short to play with cheap cues!
