how do you get the counter out with out damanging the rail, looks like it should just pull out but i dont want to break anything .

There are 2 barbs on each side of the counter that dig into the wood in the rail. Those need to be depressed to get the counter to slide out. I usually use a thin flat blade screw driver and kinda work around in a circle. Push one barb in and gently pull out, then the next and so on. You will eventually walk the barbs out.

When putting them back in, pry the barbs apart a little more and it will make them grab a little better and fit tighter.
