Gold Crown III in black?

I have a Brunswick single page ad flyer from 1991 showing a Gold Crown III in what they call Black High Tech. I have never seen one of these in person.

Does anyone know how rare these are?

Would it be feasible to buy the black rail tops and refinnish the bottom pieces to achieve this look?

Thanks in advance. Fred

I first saw these at the 1992 14.1 US Open, they were real nice for sure. I don't think you can put them in the rare catagory, but there certainly isn't an over abundance of them around. I think rebuilding to black would not be worth it really, easier and cheaper to just buy a black one. Also most the gold crown IV are black I think, very similar look.

One just sold on ebay with fixed pockets for $1,800.00 close to Los Angeles.

I painted the aprons and skirts on my GCI and thought about changing the tops of the rails.

They around, you just have to keep your eyes open.

They are hard to find, but occasionally pop up. I know where a black GCII is in excellent condition in Texas. I was debating on buying it, but chose to go a different route.

johnf_34 - If you aren't interested would you please PM me with the black GC II info?

The black finish on the GC-4 was an extra $1,000 at retail. Most were the wood grain finish.

This is my black finish GC-4

That sure is a good looking table!

Hemicudas -- What is your opinion of the GC 4 vs the earlier 2s and 3s? The 4s are obviously easy to find in black but have their detractors.

So I'll "Ask the man who owns one."

(For extra credit which car company had that slogan :-)

Sadly, I am as far from a table mechanic as anyone. King Cobra is a master mechanic. He would be able to tell you.

Personally assuming the price is the same or very similar I can't see any reason not to buy a GC IV over a GC III. I know some people prefer the older GC I and II as the overall build quality and materials are supposed to be better. For me the big selling point of the GC IV is the flush pocket lips, although there has been some issues with ball spitting because of this. (They can spin around in an empty pocket and pop back out.) I think they have a better leveling system too.

Personally I think the most important factor other than the table itself is the table mechanic who sets it up. A bad table mechanic can make almost any table look and play bad and vice versa.

And BTW I have a very similar looking table made by AMF years ago in black with gold corner castings. I love the color combination even though my table is pretty well worn. (The gold finish has worn off the top pocket castings for example) Note that the rails are a matt finish now, if they were originally glossy the varnish has long since worn off. I think the Brunswick black GC tables are a gloss finish and if so I'd imagine you'd spend a large amount of your life wiping the finger marks off them.

I had a GCIII and currently have a GCI. I disassembled and assembled them both and I did not notice any differnece in quality of materials. They are both built very sturdy.
