Golf on a 6x12= worst game in history

This has got to be the worst game for high-level players. It's absoloute torture. When strong players go at it on a 6x12 with pockets that barely fit a snooker ball, the games last 3-5 hours apiece. We took our horse down to another poolhall to look for action and he got in a golf game. After the first hour I wanted to set the damn snooker table on fire. I sat for 9 hours and watched two whole games get played. They play so careful, they give up absoloutely nothing. The only time someone makes a ball in the hole they are on is when it's checkmate, i.e. the ball is in the jaws and the defending player is hooked or can't knock it away. And for those of you who don't know, the type of snooker table I'm talking about is the ones most commonly used in America, with the super tight pockets that barely fit a snooker ball, not those buckets (in comparison) in England. Don't get me wrong, this is probably one of the toughest games in cuesports and requires incredible skill. But there is just no climax in the game. No risk, no great shots made. Just a bunch of two way shots combined with some excellent speed control, and bam you have a 5 hour stalemate. A friend of mine who is an old timer told me that the old players tried to kill the game of golf, as in wipe it off the face of the planet. I can understand why. What a bore.

I agree whole heartedly in your assessment! The pockets are tighter and every shot is a two way shot. Most shots require plenty of thought and patience resulting in longgggg games. One pocket seems like 9-ball in comparision to the games I've witnessed. The first hours of play you amazed by the constant two way play and then...ok enough!

TY & GL

Do you mean that because of how much everyone spends in table time? What about the risks associated with golf for the houseman? Such as death by boredome? :D

I am afraid you are judging the game after having watched bad players. It's quite a game whan you see good players play. Knowing the table has a lot to do with the game as well.

No these guys were jam-up golf players. My complaint was that they all played the game so well, and so perfectly that it just drove me insane. Did you read my whole post or just skim thru it? How much better can the game be played when the safetys and two way shots are so good that the game literally becomes a 5-hour stalemate that draws to a gradual yet inevitable end in checkmate?

I used to play at a place where golf was a big game. Players like Danny D. Mike Caralla, Bill Incardona and who ever was around would play. It was a 24 hour room with 3 golf tables and all three went all day and at least one game was going on 24 hours a day. Knowledgeable spectators would pack the place watching all day and night and hundreds of thousands of dollars would change hand every month. You watched bad players and didn't know anything about the game yourself, I am not surprised you were bored.

How about you describe how the game is played by good players instead of describing the atmosphere of the poolhall? That would make more sense.

Were they playing one or two ball golf? My reference was to you saying how boaring the game is, it is not when it can have people staying up all night trying to get a seat to watch. Good players don't play 5 hour games. You hear players say the same thing about one pocket when they see two bad players play a two hour game. This just tells me they don't play too well.

I might add to my own responce it was great watching them play, I enjoyed it. But I never got to see the final outcomes because of the lenght of the games.

Golf On Big Bertha In Bellflower

As an old time golf player and someone who used to ROB pool champuions on the 6 x 12 in Bellflower for years, I think I you are dumb enough to get in a game you don't know, you deserve to go off. Next to one pocket, golf is the hardest game to learn (no offense to you straight pool players). Now take into consideration the home court advantage, and a stranger has almost no chance playing a local good player. Grady beat me playing heads up on Bertha many years ago, but he can play a little golf. He was hanging around the Billiard Palace in Bellflower when Verne Peterson re-built Bertha. If your talking about a ring game, if all of the players have played together for some time and the rules are decent, the good players protect the weaker players, and gang up to keep a front runner from winning the game. The "DENVER" rule (you pay double if you sell out) will make the reckless players learn how to play safe. We used to play 30/3 or 50/5 five handed ring games in Bellflower, and sure, some of the games took hours, but it was a sweet payday when you won one. The payoffs were a little too good, because a little team play & business pretty much ruined those games. Then we started playing liabiity snooker, but that is another story. OHB is right, it is the best house game there is. If there was a decent golf game in the Sacramento area I'd be there every day. They play some at Kim Davenport's place in Modesto, but that is on a 5 x 10 and a couple of hours away for me, but now I'm getting fired up about playing some golf & may go down there. I love to watch and play golf on the snooker table .At the pool hall I play at in beloit WI all they do is play golf every day mostley in the mouning I think it is a realy fun game to watch every one sharking each other people making ungodley shots and it's awsome to see a guy run 4 or 5 holes after making a 5 rail bank for shape.I don't play much , golf becaue the guys at the pool hall play to much for me they play 5 bucks a hicky and 10 bucks a game or they play 20 bucks a game 10 bucks a hicky which can add up quick if ya hit there ball you owe them the price of the game. I like to play either a 3 -2 game or once in a while a 3-5. The players at my pool hall are very strong and I love to watch them ***** and complain and try to tell each other the shot lol.It is a blast to watch I go and watch all the time .The old guys love the game it's the only game they play I think it is a crap shoot great when ya shoot after the weaker players thoe lol.

golf

I have never had a chance to play golf on a 6x12 snooker table. I have only played on a regular gold crown. it is my favorite game to play. I know it takes hours on end to play, but i still love it. I dont get to play too much though. I wish i did.

It is a very social game, guys can be betting hundreds a game and not look like they are heading to the electric chair. Partners are really fun or captain. Captain is one of my favorites.

No offense, but the Canadian tables I have seen (Riley/Dufferin) have pockets that are like buckets compared to the tables I have played on here. Plus, a lot of places here play with pool balls to make it a little tougher, and the Canadian game I saw had some obstacles on the table. Seems like it was a very different game. John Henderson

I dont think you be bored watching Jose Parica and Yvgeny Stalev playing some golf on a 6 x 12. I did and was blown away by the shots they both attempted and made.

JR and Yobagua Golf games still go on daily at HT on "Big Bertha" but the stakes are usually smaller than when you were around. Typical game is $20.00/5.00 plus an immediate 20.00 if you hit somone else's ball 1st. Generally 4-6 players every day and several games a day. One game a few weeks ago lasted over 6hrs. There is more arguing and anger in a Golf game than in any other 2 games combined. It is amazing after what things are hollered at people that they can drop it all and play together the next day.

Pockets are miniscule, yet as Yobagua said, somehow people like Parica can friggin fire the balls in during a game of Liability. I have never understood how that can be done. I will watch a game for awhile before I leave and see good players have a ball in the jaws and can't get it in and watch other good player nail 3 railers with perfect speed to get out. Hell, I have a hard time sleeping 6 hrs much less playing with people *****ing all the time for that long.

But you have to know the table!

I should have mentioned they were playing teams, with four men. I don't know much about the rules and I thought that's how it's played normally, but apparently it can also be every man for himself. Maybe that's why they were playing so carefully?

Anyways, to John Henderson, etc. There are a couple of golf players down there that just play incredibly good. What I mean by that is their speed control on that table is just unbelievable. One of the players who probably plays the best golf in the poolhall is a no-name from Mexico. I don't care how good Parica or anyone else supposedly plays the game, I think this guy could hang with them. I'm not gonna say his name or what place because I don't want to kill anyone's action, supposedly alot of them play the game for a living.
