Let me just add a little beef to this thread!
If it were not for the REGIONAL tours, pool would be a dead fish in the water for professional players.
The reason why you see so many male pros competing in REGIONAL tours is because there does not exist a STRONG professional tour for men. The REGIONAL tours is the best game in town, literally, for men PROs.
Independently promoted events, such as the U.S. Open and Derby City Classic, are few in number.
It is a shame that the BCA organization only has one BCA Open "invitational" a year. That is their contribution to professional pool.
The Glass City Open closed its doors for good because it was just too difficult to earn a profit. Though the promoters have a great deal of passion for the game, it just isn't economically feasible to take a financial loss each year and then get crticized for their efforts by the pool public for what they deemed as the event being too expensive for them to attend. Thereafter, the Glass City Open, one of my favorite tournaments, is no more.
I have said it before and have been met with criticism, but I will say it again. The existing lot of American professional players is dwindling. The American tournament trail is a wilderness with not very many opportunities to earn a decent income playing professional pool. Soon professional pool as a sport in the States will be no more. Those professional American players who do desire to pursue their dreams will have to fly overseas. The American tournament trail will be a broken-down highway with opportunities nonexistent. Today, even the industry members within the pool culture are pulling out, slowly but surely.
