Good With a Rifle=Good at Pool?

No correlation or connection.......the muscles involved, breathing, the anatomical positions, the amount of movement in a pool swing versus squeezing a round off offhand, kneeling, squatting or prone.....doesn't matter....the only common denominator is eyesight and if telescopic sights are used, then the analogy loses all validity since we rely on normal vision to play pool.........and when you squeeze the trigger, the bullet always leaves the barrel the same way.......with the same revolutions, i.e. twist, and exit velocity at the muzzle never varies except by changing loads......predictable recoil every time......and the bullet always goes straight and is only influenced by yardage & windage variables (and grains of powder used) ....the shooter just pulls the trigger.

There is no similarity with playing pool except for eyesight and minimizing unnecessary body movement. Trap and skeet are different shooting sports with moving targets involving hand/eye coordination but in pool, the balls are not moving.....even shotgun shooting does not comport very well.....eyesight once again is the only common denominator.

I believe there is one similarity, when shooting a rifle/hand gun, with iron sights, you are taught to focus on the front sight (both the rear sight and target are a bit out of focus). Similarly with pool most people agree that you should focus on the object ball, which can be compared to the front sight.

Perhaps staying still and a smooth stroke compared to a smooth trigger squeeze may be comparable but I think anything beyond that is a stretch.

No matter what you say about any similarities, everything changes in the actual delivery.

You can breathe, hold, release, slow deep breaths, focus your eyes, relax while all basically motionless.

All you do is when ready is squeeze while remaining as still as possible....none of which occurs in pool.

You swing the cue stick, you exercise different body components, muscles and tendons......your shooting
stance can drastically vary with some types of shots......you have body movement when delivering your
actual stroke of the cue ball.....it just isn't even close other than by forced rationalization of any similarities.

Shooting a shotgun is a better comparison.
There are no sights on a shotgun (and no, the bead on the end of a shotgun is not a sight. It's there to let you know where the end of the barrel is) and there are no sights on a pool cue, either metallic or optical. Aiming is done by the brain using reference points and past experiences with targets in order to place the cue ball, or bird shot, in the best position to accomplish the intended goal. That is why they are so similar, and I'll wager Scott will agree with what I am saying.
Shotgunning is considered an art form. I therefore say that pool playing is one, as well. :)
Archery would be a decent comparison too. I was always a quick study with pool and shooting of any kind. Darts.....not so much. Never put much effort into that one though

$8,400 would put you in the top 10 for earnings from pro pool lol, much better choice in shooting:thumbup:
Jason

And isn't that sad:(

I'm a decent shot and all but I'm NO pro! If I had to rate myself of give myself a strong A in bullseye shooting. And when compared to pro pool, I should be ranked somewhere in the 300-400!

Like I said, sad!

Either way I enjoy doing both but if I was to compare the 2 I'd rather bullseye shoot than play pool! That being said, I'm extremely confident if it wasn't for pool, I would be a good bullseye shooter! I do believe they have a lot of similarities!

Wow...rifle hustling! Who woulda thunk? LOL I can definitely see the same quality of "egos" from shooters in either or both sports.

To the OP...you better hope none of your "fish" find out you're hustling them. Bragging about it on an internet discussion board is probably not the best way.

No bragging here sir, just stating the facts! #1, "they" don't know I play pool and #2 "azbilliards" don't know my birth name which is found on only ID!

Plus, I don't "hustle" shooting;) think about what "could" happen if you piss the wrong person off!

I'm sure if pool players gambling big money always had easy access to guns, there would be lots of people with bullets up there butts;)

I am going to disagree with the basic premise, unless it is limited in scope.

So much about pool happens on the break, a person with a monster break is vastly better off than a person with an average (or below average) break.

A player with a monster break and lesser shooting ability, will often dominate a player with an average break and slightly better shooting ability.

There is nothing about shooting rifles, pistols, or shotguns that is anything like the break in pool. The rest of it I buy, completely.

Everytime I'm in a concert (I listen to classical music) I always look at the violonists's arm and can't help to think "damn, that's an arow straight arm movement"...
I do think that they would be able to have very staight stroke, so they would be able to become decent players in short period of time...

Haven't met anyone willing to try and test my hypothesis yet...

Well I totally disagree first off , so called monster breaks are a big advantage in lower level players not nearly the same impact in the pro level were controlled break and parking the cue has shown to be equally effective ,,
Shooting a gun requires a good eye a good stance steady hands and good concentration
Things all good pool shooters have
I'm relatively sure I could make a good pool shooter a good shot , of course the other way around is no guarantee but it's a good start

So how do you find your camo rifle after you drop it in the woods?

Tell me about it.
I went to Bass Pro Shops the other day and bought myself a camouflaged shirt.
I hung it up in the closet and now I can't find it.
I'll tell you, if that isn't bad enough my sex life isn't so hot, either.
Me and my girlfriend smoke after sex. The problem is I've been on the same pack of cigarettes since 1975. I'm worried about her though. She's up to three packs a day!
I know she's cheating on me, too. I came home early the other day, walked through the door, and the parrot yelled, "Quick. Out the window!"
And my kid. Don't get me started on my kid. We were talking at the breakfast table this morning and I said to him, "Someday you'll have kids of your own." He looked at me and said, "So will you!"
What a kid. Last week he went to the Father and Son banquet at school. He took the Postman.
I'm telling you. :D

Thanks again, Rodney. R.I.P.

I haven't been feeling so hot either. I went in to my Doctor's office the other day.
He had six cases of VD.
He's all right now, of course.

My daughter failed her driver's test three times. She couldn't get used to the front seat!
