Got a fixer-upper for my first pool table, looking for guidance

Im also wondering how this table is meant to separate the cue ball, because so far it is not. I got a set of what I believe are used Aramith balls from the local pool hall. I have found the area in the guts of the table where the cue ball is supposed to be separated out, but I dont feel a magnet in the area anywhere, and I cant see anything to suggest that a larger cue ball is meant to be used.

Its not the end of the world if I dont get dedicated cue ball return; theres no coin op mechanism right now that would make it any kind of inconvenient. I am just curious how things (are supposed to) work.
Smaller cue ball.

Also curious if anyones ever seen rails like this:

These sit sandwiched between the top of the rails, the exposed, finished/veneered wooden rails, and these platforms, AND they serve the purpose of holding the slate down to the lower half of these platforms.

Yes, Delta and old Brunswick coin operated tables had rails designed just like that. The slots in the rails allow them to slide past the rail bolts used to clamp the rail cap down on the rails, pinching them in place. The rail bolts are Allen headed bolts.

See that rail mounting block the rail bolts go into? Measure from the inside edge of the one in your last picture, to the opposite side of the frame, and see if that don't come.out to 43" wide by 83"long

Thats what I've measured. Its about 1/8" longer in each direction than the slate itself, only coming out to about 42-1/8"x82-1/8".

Well, then the good news is that spacer board is non structural, so you can cut it back to make room for the slightly bugger skate then. Don't try removing it, that's particle board, just cut it with a circular saw.
