Grady/Incardona Commentary

Since Grady has been posting lately, I figured I'd say this. I think the Grady/Incardona combination is my favorite when it comes to commentary. I find the constant disagreements amusing in a sort of "grumpy old men" sort of way (not to say you guys are that old, but the bickering some times reminds me of the humor in that movie). Aside from the amusement factor, both of these guys are great players who bring a ton of knowledge to their commentary - unlike some of those "other brands". I also like the the fact that they'll say things matter-of-fact rather than flowering them up. To give an example of someone who I think does the exact opposite, Mark Wilson's commentary, in my opinion, seems overly verbose and relentlessly P.C.. I realize that Mark was/is a very good player in his own right, but that style of commentary is a bit on the boring side for my taste. Not to say that his commentary isn't appealing to some people. It's just that I prefer the style of a Grady or Billy Incardona over that of a Mark Wilson.

Anyway, that's all. :D

I too have several Accu-Stats matches with the GM/BI combo and love the banter. If they got much better, you wouldn't even need to watch the match to be entertained... those two could just tell stories and bicker...

Love listening to them --- I can do that when I am spinning up a cue and building cues --- I can't always watch the action, but their commentary sort of makes up for it. Just put on the head phones - don't hear the whine of a machine and listen to "just good old boys"

At one point in my learning curve Grady and Billy were doing constant commentary in my head while I was actually playing my matches. No kidding, I would say (in my head) well Grady whatta ya do here, well Bill I like to hit it like this and correct me if I'm wrong but isn't there a tremendous tendency to _________ on this type of shot?
Thank God for Accu stats and the commentary.

During the BCN coverage of the DCC, the screen would be black while the audio was still going, and I would just sit there and listen to Grady and Billy (or Freddy the Beard, who I also like a lot) and almost didn't miss watching the pool action. It would have been worth $29 just to hear those guys shoot the breeze. ESPN and the major networks need to watch these guys to learn how to keep it real and entertaining at the same time. Almost forgot Danny DiLiberto, who also was great. Four lovable curmudgeons.

BRK-man,
That's the stupidest thing I ever heard.

Vin Sculley is the "Grady Mathews of Baseball." Get your facts straight.

My favorite commentators are Grady, Billy, Danny D, and Jim Rempe. I always learn something listening to them, and they don't dumb down the commentary like other commentators do. I don't wanna name names, but I have this tape of Grady and some no name, the no name really had no idea what he was talking about and he let Grady do most of the commentating. The guy made so many stupid suggestions that I could tell that Grady was rolling his eyes in the booth next to him. The guy would say something really stupid and Grady would say "mm hmm" and then quickly change the subject LOL

LOL.......Man I hate when I get the facts wrong...Thanx for correcting me...:D

Incardona/Matthews

One of my favorite banters between Bill and Grady was when Buddy Hall was the 3rd man commentating and Billy brought up some tournament when Grady had beaten Buddy in a 9-ball match...11-0...and Billy went on to say that afterward when he and Grady were talking, how Grady said he was probably the best 9-ball player in the world at that time .... which started Buddy chuckling but the punchline really got me laughing when Billy said, "then he proceeds to lose his next 2 matches...." after which Billy and Buddy are laughing and Grady, obviously embarrassed, said he didn't want Billy telling people THAT... That was so hilarious....very entertaining and candid, and why I also like the Incardona/Matthews team for commentating....

I had one where Archer I think ad just played, sat down next to grady and someone else. Grady farts and says to Archer, "did you hear that" Then some one informs them there being taped. Pretty funny.

I saw that tape and remember the comments, it was hilarious! My favorite Grady comment of all-time was on an accu-stat tape during a one-pocket match I think frm the '91 or '92 Legends of One Pocket...anyway Billy is playing a match and Grady and Buddy Hall are commentating. Billy keeps ducking like he always does, he wouldn't go for anything. So finally he's left with a fairly easy and makeable shot and Grady and Billy say "now he HAS to go for this shot", well Billy ducked again and played safe,
to which Grady announces: "Now That Is Cowardice Of The Highest Order!!" and Buddy just cracks up laughing!

they're too busy bickering to say anything remotely concerning the game at hand. the two together blows, imo. i prefer them seperate.

I agree that their's is a good mix, though I'm not sure they would agree with that sentiment. My favorite combo is Bill Incardona/Danny DiLiberto, but the essential ingredient is Bill Incardona. I don't particularly like Mark Wilson's commentary, but he is immensely preferably to Wynch (sp?) who unfortunately gets all the US Opens.

Mark Wilson is a good commentator, just a little bland. Johnny Ervolino was good most of the time once you get used to his voice. I think Buddy Hall always does a good job; especially when he's paired with some of the old school players.

I think one of the main reasons players like accu-stats so much more than ESPN,etc... is the combination of good players doing commentary in a setting where they are comfortable. They seem to relax and joke around, tell old stories, as well as comment on the game. Seems like you're hanging out in a pool hall with them.

The same guys get that deer in the headlights look and stiffen up on ESPN. Buddy is a whole different guy when I've seen him on national tv (years ago). I think they're too worried about looking professional or screwing up.

I agree with Catscradle about Incardona. I have a couple with DiLiberto and Wilson. I like DiLiberto, but Wilson spends WAY too much time kissing Danny's butt.

I bought seats to the US Open once right next to the comentary booth and had the best time during the week listening to Grady/Billy/Danny/Buddy give their imputs, cut up with each other and compare stories. Having known/lived with Johnny Ervolino I am extremely biased towards his opinion/knowledge...he was my favorite in the booth. M Wilson has his moments but not my favorite by a long shot.

Nothing I like more is to hear Grady/Billy/Danny argueing over a shot before it happens, the shot goes off and one was right <Normally Danny> and the other two try to explain their thinking while the third just sits back and laughs...classic pool player situations!!
