efren for me has the greatest comeback in overall playing career. after a couple of defeats he had from mika immonen twic here in the philippiunes, at the On Cue 23 part 2 and Cafe Puro tourney also here which he could have won but immonen pulled it off. now he's back on track,he grabbed last week's crown in the asian 9 ball singapore stop and now he defeated fong pang chao in vietnam stop. from a 9-5 lead ,efren caught up running rack after rack and finally chao gave in although efren had no balls pocketed in his final break for the win but he did still have his magic. congratulations efren!

Yap you are right that was a great comeback from efren down 9-5 and
Chao is breaking and he have to win 6 straight racks from an alternate
break format and against a very precise and surgical Chao...but of
course he's up with the magician...and guess what? what i heard
is this efren's first win against Fong Fang Chao...

By the way are you from the Philippines also...
and if you are from where?

I have that tape, John.....The actual score was Earl 104, Efren 87, when the comeback started......so Earl was 17 racks ahead and needed to win 16 more.....I think Efren finally cought up and tied the score at 117-117..and won the next 3 out of 4 racks for a final score of 120-118...The comeback was one of the greatest, I'm sure, but I think the final score showed just how close in ability and talent both of these champions were...Think about it, these guys played a total of 238 games of 9-ball and the margin of victory was just a couple of games!

Thank you for the correction.

Dont forget Efrens trail to victory at the Derby and his utter destruction of Mika and Jimmy Wetch in 9 ball. Didnt some recently post that Efren was getting old and ready to retire? Some retirement! LOL!!!!

Maybe Efren thinks he's retired and now can play much more relaxed ?
Like he has never player relaxed enough... :p

How about starting a new thread, "greatest scumbags" for players that behave badly or are just plain a$$holes :D

Efren is definitely playing much more relaxed. I've never seen him joke around that much while playing in a tourney. He seems to be interacting with the crowd much more. Specially when he is winning.

I am not able to locate my response I posted two days ago.I am posting it again for test.I was at that tournament in Chicago. It was Roger Griffis. But I do not remember the the name of Roger`s opponent.Cheers

I have a memory of reading the unbelievable-almost-comeback in history, it took place in 9-ball World Championships in the 90's. Can't remember the players but one of them was Roger Griffish. Anyway, let's say it was Roger who was trailing 12-0 in a race to 13. Well, Roger made the rigorous task to climb up all the way to 12-12 and broke in the hill-hill rack and saw 4 balls drop on the break and to his horror the cueball as well !! His stonecold opponent just managed to run the remaining 5 balls and the set.

Anyone remember the players and the actual winner or has anyone heard this story ?
Another great comeback with a horrible ending is a recent match (i forgot which) between reyes and yang race to 11. yang got to the hill early 5-0 with impeccable play and excellent, excellent shotmaking. Then efren started to get lucky and got to 5-5! On his last shot on the nine, efren got out of line with the nine and the cueball on a straight line in the middle of the table. Refusing to use the bridge, he cued up, stretched as far as he can, placed the butt of his cue on the table and nudged it with the palm of his hand! Both commentators went wild, saying that's the first time they've seen such a shot. They couldn't get over it, replaying the shot over and over. They were still talking about it when yang came up to the table for his break (it was alternate breaks), .... and sank the nine on the break, winning the game. how anti-climactic is that????

anyway, that was a quarter-final match, i think. they met again in the semis, and efren won that one easily. i think he even went on to win the tournament, although i'm not sure.....

I've seen it as well. I think it was a group match best of 10 frames, so a draw is possible. Efren was down 5-0 and crawled back to 5-4 and made the shot you described. An amazing shot, I'd say ! And then it was Yang's break and he made the nine from the snap... Very anticlimatic...

Actually, I tried the shot and managed to make the 9 after a few tries. It's not so difficult, but coming up with a shot like that in that situation is pure magic ! Pure Efren...

i also seen that match on TV, i think it was the World Pool League 2002
at Poland. And yes he win the championship on that year i believe.
because he won it on succeeding years in 2001 and 2002..

Additionally also what they are commenting is that was it a legal shot coz
he almost let the cue lie full bodied on the table....And indeed using
the palm pushing the cues is like that is unthinkable in pool which is use to
holding the tail of the cue using the fingers...that was mind blowing and
very creative of efren notwithstanding its gutsiness/boldness of the shot.

Thanks for the correction, cebuanoninoy and mjantti. Yup, Efren almost had an illegal shot there. Good thing he had the presence of mind to keep the tip in his bridge.

Another great comeback i remember was during the ICOC (I think it was the 2001, not sure though )Efren vs. Mika in the finals. Efren made a couple of slip-ups by not calling the shots on the 9 (which was the rule in the ICOC) virtually giving Mika the title but a great last tie-breaker game by Efren secured him the title! Real heart-pounding stuff.

I've seen that match as well ! Especially I remember the super difficult/annoying nine Efren made to even the sets and take it to the tie-breaker. Super thin cut with cueball about 6" from the nine and nine near the long rail...

I was wondering where I can get videos of the ICOC tournaments. Does anyone sell these?

Yap i also that one.
It was by set. Mika wins the first set..
Efren on second by that Super Cut..my goodness...that was
amazing shot to say the less..
then a sudden death 1 rack anybody's game...
And yap Efren won it for 50,000 US $.
I think as far as i could remember it was in
Moheegan Hotel and Casino ?

Wrong game to get into

I was playing a game of straight pool in Houston about 25 years ago...playing for $100 and race to 125...I broke the head ball into the side and ran 88..my opponent got up and then ran 125!!!!!! He wanted to play another game...SILLY BOY!!!!!
