A friend of mine was telling me that Greg Stevens was the greatest 9-ball player that he has ever seen. I'd like to hear some more about this guy.

Any stories would be appreciated.

The one I knew was a legend around Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas when I was growing up. I believe it was in the Dallas Newspaper....... Big Train Stevens runs 15 Racks of 9-Ball. This was in the late 60's.

I played him once in Wichita in 66....I was 17. I had been winning some bucks at 5 a game and he walked in and put a quarter on the table. I beat him twice and he tried to jack the bet up, but a friend told me who he was. I told him he'd have to win it like he lost it....and he did! Quickly! He pulled of a couple cut shots I couldn't believe.

I watched him once after that. He was the real deal. I didn't get to see him play anymore.....but heard about him once in awhile. Heard he gave up too much weight and lost often.....drugs or alcohol I heard, but couldn't swear to it. He seemed pretty old to me at the time, but I was only 17. lol

Think he had a place south of Wichita he hung out at.....and a place called the Chez Joi Club? He played all games well, from what I heard, when he was in his prime.

thanks for responding. My friend also said Greg would have to give up lots of weight to get any action at all. He said he'd play the ghost for 10to1 for a dollar just for cigerettes. That's just sick.

He gave up some Huge Weight frm what I've heard. But back then it was 2-shot ball in hand......push allowed every shot. Made a lot of difference. I still think that's the best game going!

Big Train

There are several stories and a brief 2-3 page biography of him in the book "Hustler Days" by R.A.Dyer. He was said to be one of the few players who could give Jersey Red a run for his money during his Texas days. When in his zone, they claim no one could touch him but yes, he would earn big dollars and then give up way too much weight and lose it all.

He would play for long periods of time and be on alot of drugs, the smart players wouldnt try him when he was up and wired,he was just too tough, they waited until the later part of his session when he was running out of gas and pounce on him leave him broke.;)
