Grinding

My small stump grinding business took me to three pool players homes today. second time I have done three poolplayers in a row! Networking I guess. One was cuemaker Jim Ingram from OKC. After finishing his stump he asked if I would like to see his shop. I somehow found time to take a short tour. his pride and joy is his South Bend lathe (1936). Showed me a nice veneered four point he was making and some of his shafts in progress. Jim sold some of his equip to John Guffy years ago when he stepped away to go back to school. He got John started on the cuemaking path. repurchased some or all when John stepped away. I have a Guffy SP and a Ingram tuxedo cue. He explained how he woodburns in his sig on his cues. He heats up the very small stamp and then tests burns it onto scrap wood until it is correct temp. Too hot and blackening occurs. No hitting, just lightly pushing into the wood. Turned into a great afternoon of stump grinding! That was my day today.

Agreed. So much of the time we see nonsensical BS such as: Discussions about bonus ball, what's wrong with pool, and players and tournaments that three-fourths of the membership don't know about, and don't care about.
This place is way too damn cliquey.
Nice pleasant thread here, though.

Yes on the positive. I've only been hanging on here a few years and probably been in a few pissing contests, but no more. AZ got me on to my first true custom, a DZ and about a year ago a Tucker! New Tucker! How lucky is that? AZ has altered my stroke which I never would have imagined doing. Numerous nuances of the game also. We go thru this life but once. If there is any good thing we can say or do, do it now, as we shall not pass this way again!

You and I have been in a couple of those "pissing contests" on a face to face level, and I have always enjoyed them because they have sometimes contributed to the clarity of the CSI rules. And that statement is not in the least bit sarcastic - I mean it in the most sincere and complimentary way. Believe me, I've been battered in every way imaginable in the last seven years almost in equal quantity to the rave reviews, but your "battering" has always been positive, even if the discussions sometimes were in elevated tones.

You also gave me a piece of advice during a match about 4 years ago which, although it didn't really sink in at that point, has since served me well and totally altered my approach and attitude in late match strategies and perspective. At the time, I was down 6-1 in a race to 7 and my head was hanging. You came in behind me and asked me how I was doing. I gave you the score report and your next comment was "How many games do you need?" Slightly bewildered, I said "six". You promptly corrected me and said "no, you need one."

I can truly say it has been effective for me. This year alone at nationals I won two matches when my opponents were on the hill and I needed two games in one and three in the other. I know it's not really different from the old "one game at a time" or "one shot at a time" theories, but it was just the way you delivered the line - it REALLY stuck with me. Five years ago I would have lost those matches.

And I'm not kidding about your influence on the rules. Just check the new material in Applied Ruling 1-38. The first paragraph might as well be called the "Kris clause".

See you around Sooner rather than later (even if we are lower pre-season...)

Buddy

P.S. - pm me your rates - I've got two small ones I need to get rid of...

Thanks Buddy. PM sent I hope. LOL Couldn't figure out how to look and see if it got sent. FYI I give a poolplayer discount of $5 and another $5 discount for owning up to bad hits!! The bad hit discount also includes hi level competition matches! So how much discount do you get?

I'll take the whole ten. Called a double hit on myself in one of those matches at Nationals I referred to and it was not at all obvious - it took me a moment of analysis to realize it, and the opponent seemed a little surprised at me pushing the ball to him.

I started to type a whole analysis of that second discount, but I refuse to hijack the thread!
