What do you think - should the public vote for Hall of Fame members? Is there any sport that does this?

I'm not aware of any and I DON'T think it's a good idea. It would become a popularity contest then. However I DO think Earl and Allen belong in the HOF,either now or in the future. They need to eliminate the politics involved in the selection process.

I am a very outspoken critic of ES's antic's/ behavior of late, however, there is NO QUESTION that he should be in the HOF. NOW!! He was, and might be again if he can slay his intrinsic demons, one of the most skilled 9ball players on the planet. He is as worthy of induction, if not more so, than some of the inductee's. AH was a GREAT player but not of the same ilk as the "PEARL". AH's break was never world class. Playing on slow cloth would benefit the PEARL based on his skill set. He, like a handfull of others, has a very good stroke. Watching some of the Asian phenoms makes me wonder if they could maintain accuracy if they had to make whitey dance. They have mastered the angle/bump game.:)

Barry Behrman writes of the omission of Strickland and Hopkins from the BCA HOF:

In all of my 35 years being involved with professional pocket billiards, there has never been more of a disgrace to the game as it is now.

This had me rolling in the aisles. This might not make my top 10,000 worst disgraces in pool over the past 35 years.

Yes, these guys belong, but in what way does their omission constitute an abominable disgrace to our game. It does cost the BCA Hall of Fame some credibility in the eyes of many, myself included. Still, the membership roster of the BCA Hall of Fame is hardly one of pool's more important issues. Never has been, most likely never will be.

Though I happen to like it, the elimination of the BCA Hall of Fame, in my opinion, would have a negligible impact, if any, on the game. The legacy of both Earl and Allen is safe, whether they gain BCA Hall of Fame admittance or not.

I hope these guys get into the hall of fame, but pool has bigger issues than this ---- in fact, pretty much all of pool's issues are bigger than this.

Since when do players get admitted to their sports Hall of Fame while they're still playing, anyway?

Take any other sport, baseball, football, whatever, no one is eligible until they quit playing.

Is it because billiards lacks a true organizing body, and players can be competitive even after they've gotten "old"?

The only exception I can think of is the Ladies Professional Golf Association, where automatic entry criteria exist, enabling a player to qualify for the LPGA Hall of Fame while still active.

According to LPGA.com, entrance to the LPGA Tour Hall of Fame is limited to LPGA Tour members who meet the following criteria:

1. Must be/have been an "active" LPGA Tour member for 10 years:
2. Must have won/been awarded at least one of the following - an LPGA major championship, the Vare Trophy or Rolex Player of the Year honors; and
3. Must have accumulated a total of 27 points, which are awarded as follows - one point for each LPGA official tournament win, two points for each LPGA major tournament win and one point for each Vare Trophy or Rolex Player of the Year honor earned.

As the LPGA has clearly defined hall of fame entry critieria, I'm fine with their policy. Billiards does not have such criteria for entry, and induction of players whie still active is really a silly practice.

Just another reason not to take the BCA Hall of Fame seriously. Bet I'm one of many that feels Allen would be a logical inductee in both the playing and meritorious service categories.

Leonard Bludworth once suggested an overhaul and reformation of the Hall of Fame on the forum, and his idea gained a lot of favor among the posters here. Sadly, our esteemed forum colleague and friend has had other things on his mind for quite some time now. Perahps Blud's idea will resurface at some point.

i am SO with you on this.

and the irony of the author of the guest editorial makes it surreal. the pool world is a very small pond indeed.

"accomplished more for the game than could be accounted for, page after page. They both have spent their entire lives for the betterment of the sport. " i guess i'm just not with it here, but other than win championships, i don't see what ES HAS DONE for the game except get his followers all excited.

should the public vote? i don't think ANY HOF should be a popular vote..... guyz like ES might get in :D
