Gus Szamboti Legend Cuemaker Clip

So now the question begs, have I been pronouncing his name wrong all these years? The interviewer pronounced the O like in "body" and Gus didn't correct him. You would think he cleared the pronunciation of his name before they shot the interview. I've been pronouncing the O like in "boat." Which one is it?

Please say boat

And another thought creeps in.......Gus said it took about 2 days from start to finish on the butt. What's the deal with 1 year, 2 year etc... waiting times? Are there that many orders? I mean think about it. He said it takes about 2 days, to be generous with that let's make it a week. Why such a long wait? I can understand with people like Murray Tucker that do this on the side but what about full time cue makers? If there are that many orders one would have to assume that people like Ernie Gutierrez, Richard Black, Paul Mottey etc... are millionaires. Is cue making that lucrative?

He said it took two man days, not two working days. With the adhesives and finishes that were used back then I will safely guess that there is no way he could build a cue start to finish in two working days. It takes longer for the glue to dry than that. Two man days per cue is about a 120 cue per year output. That's pretty strong for a one man shop with no automated machines.

Wish Barry would de-lurk and shed some light on this.

Most of the wait time with buying cues is from processing the woods. Some cuemakers will let their shafts "rest" a month between cuttings and it might take a year to get the shafts to finished size. Other makers have large inventories of wood that's ready to go and their wait isn't as long. The actual hours of labor in making a cue isn't that great. It's the wait time between cuts that delay the build. THe cuemakers all have different techniques and beliefs. One guy's system might allow him to complete 30 cues per year while another guy can pump out 100 cues. It's different strokes for different folks

Thanks, guys. Now the question about the pronunciation of the name. Anyone? Bueller?

The interviewer clearly mispronouced Gus's last name (Szam-boat-e). Gus was too much of a gentleman to correct him during and probably even after the filming.

Thank God. I'd hate to think I've been getting that name wrong for more than 2 decades and no one corrected me.
