LOS ANGELES – A famous custom pool-cue maker has been sentenced to two years of probation for his role in trying to help export protected African elephant ivory to Taiwan.

Seventy-five-year-old Cesar "Ernie" Gutierrez was also ordered to immediately pay a $10,000 criminal fine on Monday.

Gutierrez pleaded guilty on Aug. 29 to aiding and abetting the attempted smuggling of African elephant ivory.

Prosecutors say Gutierrez manufactured and sold two people 41 sections of custom pool cues with inlays of the protected ivory for $75,000 to $85.000. Both individuals were later arrested at Los Angeles International Airport.

Gutierrez makes ornate cues with materials that include gold, jewels and exotic woods. His customers through the years have included stars like Malibu Mike Murphy, Henny Youngman and Frank Sinatra.

A telephone message left for Gutierrez on Monday was not immediately returned.

I need to get rid of this thing quick! I won't last a day in the hoosegow! I'll take $100 bucks with a Whitten Case! Are these other cues Ivory too!!!!!!!!!! Can I donate them to Zoo or something?!!??! HELP!

Don't worry... since we have a real president, not some safe space needing, thumbsucking, liberal pansy.. we are going to bypass elephant hunting, and open up elephant poacher hunting.. this way liberals will learn exactly how to tackle problems without being the whiney 3 year olds they are....

What we have is a heralded cue-maker that got caught for knowingly breaking the law for profit motives.
it only adds fuel to the debate about the banning of ivory internationally & especially here in the USA.
Elephants are still being killed and Ernie isn't the cause and never was even a factor and that's a fact.

Nonetheless, pundits will argue differently, Collectors & enthusiasts will quote facts that fall on deaf ears.
And while the use of ivory is being curtailed as much voluntarily by cue-makers as legislatively enacted,
the slaughter of elephants continues and not a single pool cue underway, or yet to be started, has a single
thing to do with elephants currently being poached since cue-makers aren't using poached ivory in cues.

I am not gonna pick a side in the matter, I feel I am somewhat aligned wit both positions, yet not fully represented by either...
Cracking down on ivory would not show an immediate benefit, it is a long-term, large -scale behavioral change.
Like fur and countless other things that seem to be on the way out as our world grows older and smaller.

if the cues had been packed screwed together, how many "sections" would he have then been attempting to smuggle?

"sections:" wtf???????????????

Yeah, I'm in the same boat. Two worthless Ginas, lol.

Looks like the fancier one gets the most play. Do you like it better, or just had it longer?

Just the timing of the photos.

The five-pointer, that photo is new right put of the mailing tube. I've been using it exclusively for the last three or four years now and actually have four shafts for it now. The eight-pointer is older and I played with it exclusively for 15 years. I now have five shafts for it.

The cues are matched as to weight, balance, and shaft taper. I originally I wanted the five-pointer (the plain Jane) for travel. But... I would have to say that if forced to make a comparison (arrrrrrrgh!) the eight-pointer is the better player. But it's close.

Beautiful cues Malibu!!!!! I have never cared for cues with a lot of white until I saw that black and white one towards the end, kind of looks like a crown for lack of a better description. :bow-down: I think Im in love.

It is legal to own cues with ivory if purchased before 06-15-16 in CA. You can not sell them from CA. Certain states now prohibit the use of ivory, NY is one, not sure about NJ. However it seems that the rule of thumb for all others is under 7 oz. of ivory is ok. It has been illegal to ship anything ivory overseas for many years.

This at least is my understanding. If a cue weighs 19.5 oz. 7 oz of ivory is quite a bit.
