Hal Houle

You know as you go through life you come to realize that if you can have just one person after you die say "He was a good old boy" you have lived your life well. Hal seems like a good old boy.

You're right. Your post made me think that AZB should have a particular day, kind of like a holiday where we celebrate someone's life from AZB who is no longer with us.

Perhaps we should have a thread that discusses if and when this day should be. I think it would bring honor to those whom we have come to know and respect but are no longer with us. Maybe we could call it ALL AZB's Day. It would only be for one day and it would be only for those who have passed, not those who have been banned.

Hal will have a lot more than one person talking well about him when he passes. I hope he's got a lot more train wrecks, torpedoed boats and bad legs to go. My only regret (so far) is that I never got the chance to break bread with him.

Dave, thanks for letting us know that Hal is ok!! And, thanks for the pictures, it's nice to see what someone looks like that you've never met in person. {And I've seen pics of Smorg;)} I'll try to call him myself in the very near future.

Wow -- It's like Carlos Casteneda's trips to visit Don Juan... Sounds like you had some great experiences.

So Dave, to sidetrack your thread just briefly, I will be flying into DC Sun Feb 22 getting in at 11:45 AM. I don't have a work commitment until 8:00 am the next morning.

Sooo, do you have any interest in driving to meet me somewhere in between, say Baltimore or Towson or something like that. I would be delighted if you would agree to teach me, at the table, the things you've been talking about here.

Also, I'd be happy to gamble some with you if you like. We could play a few different games, and you could even consider me as a stand-in for PJ

Let me know either here or in a pm. I could get up there about 2:00 pm.

HEY! How come you didn't want to gamble with me?

btw, i met PJ at the DCC but it was like a dream, he came in out of the fog, introduced himself, smiled and disappeared back into the fog never to be seen again. It was so quick and short that I think it may have really been a dream.

Since he's standing in for PJ for some reason, maybe you can stand-in for me, Joey. I like my horse. Don't forget to come back with your BCA certificate of completion.

I think it was a little smart-assed to ask me to gamble given the tone and seriousness of my thread - I really posted that with my heart. That's par for the course with his clique. *rolling my eyes*

I too thought Mikes comment was out of place. He asks you for lesson then wants to try to take your money??? The guy is classy.

Update:

Spoke to Hal tonight. He said he's ok and just quit answering his phone. He actually sounded in high spirits as well.

Made me really smile that he's OK. After 2 mins, he was back in pool mode asking who's playing well, etc, and who won the DCC. Was happy to fill him in :)

That is great to hear. I have let far too much time pass without speaking to him.

Thanks for the reminder Dave.

Here is a picture I have from the first time I met Hal.
That's me just to the side and as you can tell, he was in much better health then. This was two years ago I believe and Timberly took the picture.

All the best Hal.

P.S. Ask Timberly how many times he missed....NOT ONCE from anywhere on the table

It was pretty juvenile, kinda like "big brother" fighting "little brother's" fights.

Dave, I'm gonna try to give Hal a call soon too. I owe it to him to say hi.

Good post Dave, I too thought that it was going to be bad news when I saw the intial post.
Only getting into pool in the last few years, I knew very little of the finer points of the game. I knew how to sit in the gin mill and play for a beer or whatever.
Since retiring, I've tried to learn as much as possible. Video's, book's etc.
First major thing I did, was to take Simpson's class, learned alot of things I had no idea of. Continuing on my quest for knowledge, I saw a post about people who give lessons. My next step was, my wife, the dog and I loaded up our rv trailer went to Yellowstone. I forgot to add we stopped for 2 or 3 days and saw Jack & Bev Madden in Montanna.
Jack showed me all sorts of stuff I had no idea about. He tried to get me aiming his way and I just couldn't get it. We parked our trailer in his yard and the girls did their thing and we shot pool on his 9 footer with shimmed pockets that were probabley under 4".
The 4 of us sat on their porch the last night before we left and Jack showed us pictures and told stories of his days on the road. And of
the characters and their gimmicks they would do/use to gamble.
Thanks Jack.

This post was originally meant to talk about Hal and his friendlyness and knowledge that he passes out freely. But there are to many others that have helped me improve my game that I couldn't not mention them.
I'll never be really consistant (my body won't let me, to many years of firefighting) and I'll never be real good. But I play fair. And it's because of all the people I mentioned. All of them were very knowledgeable and helpful.
If you need / want to improve your game give the guys I mentioned a call.
Keep Hal in your prayers and hope you make it to his age and be as sharp as he is.
Sorry about the rambling.

John,

Thank you. You know I was amazed at your desire to master this game. I wanted you to excel because you tried so hard when it wasn't easy.

And John is more than just a firefighter! Personally, I think he is a real hero in this crazy world. Most of us haven't faced the fights he has endured. I'm honored that you came to play and you continue to push yourself to play and play well. And next time you go to Yellowstone, do a little side trip and visit.

Jack,
Get that table warmed up, were going West either in the spring or early fall. Maybe both, don't know when yet. But when we do, you & Bev will know it.
John

...and one more pic of my friend and mentor.

Is it "par for the course for your clique" to be so ungracious and paranoid about a simple invitation to play pool? Maybe you should leave the house more often.

lol.

Mike offered to gamble with you, "if you liked." He travels all over the country, happy to meet various forum members, not caring a wit whether he's got the best or worst of it. It's just a *courtesy* thing, because some guys don't like to play for funsies. Same with offering to play different games: it's a courtesy.

He asked him to show him some of the "things you've been talking about here." That's all. And then offered to gamble with him, "if you like."

What is so lacking in class about that?
