Hampton Ridge Rocks The Spot!

Open for only a few months, Pete Fusco's new pool room, The Spot in Trevose, PA, hosted a magnificant tournament on the Hampton Ridge Tour this Sunday, June 26th.

With nineteen 9-foot GC's, there was plenty of room for the 34 players in attendance. The room is beautifully constructed with 20-foot ceilings and comfortable seating available for everyone. There are also nine 7-footers, two ping-pong tables, and the Fizz Room in the back, a separate area adjoining the main pool room with multi-colored fluorescent lights where pool is played in the dark with day-glow balls and rails.

Some of the players who showed up to compete in the one-day event were Maryland Young Gun Shaun "The Shirt" Wilkie who was accompanied by his lovely grandmother and uncle, Frankie Hernandez proudly sporting his beloved Yankee baseball cap encrusted with rhinestones, Local Player Eddie Abraham who the last Hampton Ridge tournament, Danny "Kid Delicious" Basavich, Pat McNally, Fastest Gun on the East Coast Mike Miller, Matt Kroh, and Keith McCready. The lovely Jade was the only lady player in the event.

A calcutta was held before the festivities began, and Frankie Hernandez went for the first blind bid, and Kid Delicious went for the second blind bid. Jose the TD then proceeded with the players meeting explaining the Hampton Ridge rules: double-elimination format, a race to 7 in the winners' and losers' side, 3-ball-foul rule in effect, call 9-ball except on the break, alternate break with the challenger racking the balls, and one extended race to 9 in the finals.

Danny Basavich was accompanied by his girlfriend, a young lady he has known since he was a teenager, and he looks better than ever, a young 26 years of age and very much in love! He won the tournament, defeating Keith 9 to 4 in the finals, pocketing $700 for first place, with Keith pulling in $500 as runner-up, and Frankie Hernandez came in third collecting $300. The tournament paid out 12 spots plus the Calcutta monies, which was icing on the cake.

I finally got a chance to see Bristol Bob in action, the player featured in Danny's upcoming movie and book, who was also on site.

Keith played pretty good his first round, but his opponent, whose name escapes me at the time of this writing, did manage to get the score close. The matches went fast and furious because of the size of this pool room, and there was little to no wait time, which was a bonus.

When Jose the TD announced Keith's second round, I had to chuckle: "Keith McCready versus Stevie Wonder." Well, Stevie Wonder was not a blind man, and the match developed into a nail-biting hill-hill, with Keith coming out on top.

A fellow from Louisiana by way of Canada named Claude Marrier also had a great performance, going hill-hill with Danny Basavich earlier in the day. After the tournament concluded, Claude and Keith decided to enjoy a little game of stakes, one-pocket even, which provided some railside entertainment for the spectators.

I really like this pool room. There is plenty of parking available out front, and inside the place is huge. The bathrooms were clean as a whistle and spacious, and the staff were friendly. The Hampton Ridge Tour is distinctive in that each tournament is held on one day only, Sunday, which is very easy on the pocketbook, with no lodging expense. All players who compete in at least eight tour events are eligible to play in the 2-day $10,000-added guaranteed season finale at Drexeline Billiards in Drexel Hills, PA, on December 10-11, 2005.

Danny Basavich had to hurry home after his great win because he's leaving on a plane for Taiwan on Monday for the upcoming World Pool Championship, and everybody wished him good luck and hopes he does well.

Hey JAM,

How did Keith do against Claude? I left right after Danny got to the hot seat. It seemed like the slower pace took Keith out of his rhythm. The Philly player "Stevie Wonder" whose real name is Steve Dobrowolski, was and still is a great player. I have an accu stats video from about 12 years ago with him beating Buddy Hall in a Race to 5 One Pocket match at one of Grady's tournaments.

By the way, I'm the guy who spelled Claude's last name for you.

Won only one set. Mid-games, Claude made a phone call to Detroit and promptly pulled up at the end of that game with Keith winner, which was fine by me. It was late, and I wanted to get back home!

When Carlos and Keith get together, the two of them are inseparable, cracking jokes and enjoying themselves to the fullest. Carlos was sitting railside the whole duration and having a blast. Claude was a gentleman player, but by his own admission, he's a better 9-ball player than one-pocket. He did offer to play some 9-ball, to which Keith politely declined. :p

I always enjoy running into Danny Basavich on the tournament trail, and he pops up when you least expect it, just like us. :D

Last time Keith played against Danny in a tournament was at a Joss event in Quincy, and Keith beat him twice in the same tournament. I think the style of play, slow or fast, shouldn't be a factor. If Keith was hitting 'em flawlessly, Danny would have been benched during the match.

I believe winning is dependent whoever is able to catch a gear and bring their best game to the table. Keith did make a few mistakes, as did Danny during the match, and there were several safety battles, but this time Danny came out on top. It was a nice win for Danny and put a little jingle in his pocket before he departs for the WPC today.

Stevie Wonder did play well yesterday, and I enjoyed chatting it up with him. He's a funny guy! Everybody at Pete Fusco's pool room were genuinely nice, and when we first entered the joint, it was just like walking into the home of an old friend.

I wish there were pool rooms like Pete Fusco's The Spot in my neck of the woods. Being owned by a champion player, Pete set up the room very nicely with many amenities that pool players like. :)

The Hampton Ridge Tour is beginning to grow, only in its second season, and Jose the TD is to be commended for keeping it strong. For folks who are not local like me, but can drive there within a few hours, this is attractive and economical. This is why the Hampton Ridge Tour this season has 27 stops plus the $10,000-added season finale. Pool room owners seem to like the one-day events because they don't tie up their business for a whole weekend, and the Hampton Ridge Tour gives the regulars a little taste of that good old competitive spirit.

Jose has some great ideas about upcoming events, and he has proven himself to be a leader in the regional tour industry. He actually writes out the breakdown of the entry fee on the charts, so that the players can see how the monies were cut up. I had never seen that before and asked him why he did that, and he said that he wanted folks to see where the monies collected were going. He's an honest guy and devotes his time and efforts with little to no compensation, only a deep passion for the sport/game.

Every regular player on this tour is talking about receiving points and hoping to take a shot at being qualified to participate in an Allen Hopkins' event like the Skins format, which is always first class. Matt Kroh told me that he was second place in points and it keeps him coming back, win or lose. The Hampton Ridge Tour has a great cast of regular players, which is growing each month.

In my haste to leave for Trevose, PA yesterday, I left my digital camera at home. However, Jose did take a few pictures which may surface later this week.

BTW, the TD Jose's handle on AzBilliards is King B.

How did you and Antonio come out when the dust settled?

Antonio and I had been playing for about 5 hours and I was stuck one game when we both decided to quit. I was getting kinda tired and wanted to watch some of the tournament, and Antonio wanted to find some higher stakes action (which he did, with Cosmo -- owner of the major action room in Scranton, PA and the hometown of Pat McNally). But although it was a hard-fought battle, Cosmo wound up winning the 6-ahead 9-ball set.

If anybody's following this tour, keep an eye open for me. I have a friend who's been entering and trying to make the minimum of 8 in order to qualify for the final. We're targeting the ones in northern NJ - definitely Rockaway and Comet, we were at Castle, and we'll probably hit PJ's...I *love* Frankie's hat! LOL

Hi, Mary D! :) I do like that Comet pool room in Parsippany, NJ, the way the tables are spaced with ample room to shoot. When you're playing, you don't have to stop, turn around, and wait for the guy/gal on the next table to finish their shot! :p

It won't be too hard to accumulate 8 wins for you and your friends to qualify for the finals. There are 14 more tournaments before the season finale. Click the TOUR SCHEDULE button on the Hampton Ridge Tour website.

I have only seen that Yankee baseball cap a few times on Frankie's head, but each time I do, I have trouble taking my eyes off of it. I asked him yesterday where he got it, and he said a friend of his made it for him. The sparkly cap fits Frankie Hernandez to a tee. He definitely has a sense of style which is colorful and very New York City-ish!

Yesterday, he challenged Keith McCready to a football throw contest in the parking lot to see who could throw the football the farthest. I looked at Frankie's arm and then looked at Keith's arm and did not like Keith's chances one bit. :D

Hey Jennie!

This is Danielle, Kid's girlfriend. How did you guys make it home? It must have been pretty late. You described the event perfectly, there were soooo many great players there. It was a fun day. You like that spill Kid took on his way out? I'm still laughing about it right now. :D Hopefully Danny does well in Taiwan and when he gets home we will see you guys at another event. He thinks he won the event cause the trunk hit him in the head 2 or 3 times that day. It knocked some sense into him and got him out of his slump.
Take it easy...

Hi, Danielle! We got home in the wee hours of the morning, a 2-1/2-hour drive. I don't think we left until 1:30 a.m.

I guess by now, Danny is in Taiwan getting ready for the WPC. I sure do wish him well and hope he is able to bring his best game to the table this year. I think this is Danny's third trip to the World Pool Championship. So I know he's comfortable with the format. I would really like to see Kid Delicious' name in the headlines as the big winner. He can do it! :)

I almost fell on those three steps myself earlier in the day. I am glad to hear Danny did not get hurt. I noticed he was holding his arm when he left, even though he kept saying "I'm okay, I'm okay."

We're definitely going and have paid Keith's entry fee to the $25,000-added Joss NE 9-Ball Tour Season Finale at Turning Stone Casino in Verona, NY, on August 18-21. It is limited to the first paid 128 players, and the rooms are filling up very fast. If you guys are intending on going, I'd advise that you reserve your room quickly and get that entry fee in to Mike Zuglan. This is going to be a fantastic event. While Keith is doing his thing in the casino, it would be great to hang out and shop! Click here for more info:

It seems like August-September time frame, there is an event happening every single week, the Orlando Open on August 3-7, Big Apple August 11-14, Joss Season Finale August 18-21; Hampton Ridge at Pete Fusco's the Spot, August 28 (I love this pool room); $20,000-added Carolinas Open in Goldsboro, NC, Septembet 6-11; and then the $50,000-added U.S. Open, September 19-25, Chesapeake Beach, VA.

Take care, Danielle, and I definitely hope to see you on the tournament trail at one of the above events! If you hear from Danny, let us know how he's doing! :)

Hope to see you soon....

Hey Jennie,
Kid does intend on going to the Joss Finale however I cannot attend because I have a wedding to go to. The other events happening in the area (especially in NY) I will be going to. Danny fell pretty hard at the spot but he was so happy about winning the tourney he didn't even notice how hurt he was. He did land in Taiwan safely and this time they didn't lose his clothes and pool stick. He is exhausted from the 20 hr. flight but very excited about playing. Winning the Hampton Ridge tourney got him pumped and confident. We had a fun time at The Spot and will return any time there is a tourney. I don't think I've ever laughed so hard as I did when Keith and Frankie were playing. They argued about EVERYTHING imaginable. Take care and tell Keith I said hello. For sure we will see you guys soon at least once in our local area.
Talk to you later....and I will give you updates as I get them. It is expensive for him to call home too often. :D

Oh man, I can just imagine that match!! LOL, I bet it was a joy to watch! :p

Jennie, I just recently found out that I won't be at Turning stone either. I've also got a wedding to attend on Sat night... wish they would've made it Fri night so I could head up Sat morning... :(

Ain't it the truth. There's nothing better than a little win under your belt to keep the momentum going. I hope it brings him good luck. Keep us posted if you hear any WPC smut! :p

The debate about whether to flip or lag for the break was a big joke. Then they decided to flip to see who would win the decision on whether to flip or lag for the break. Keith and Frankie have a love-hate thing going on. They endeavored to play ping-pong, but when Frankie caught a glimpse of Keith's back-hand stroke, he pulled up. So then they decided to go outside in 95-degree heat and have a football throwing contest. Keith would throw the ball right into Frankie's chest, and Frankie would throw the ball way over Keith's head, cracking up as he watched him chase the ball down the other end of the parking lot!

The Hampton Ridge Tour has quite a few more stops to be had. I kind of like the one-day events, too. Will definitely catch up with y'all soon!

Like seeing two male dogs growling at each other and, in the next instance, playing catch as if they're father and son. :D

Double bummer. Timberly, I think it begins on Thursday the 18th and ends Sunday the 21st, but it is a long drive for you to just spend a day. If things change, try to make it. It truly is an exquisite venue, and the casino folks are actually kind of friendly, unlike the Sopranos-style pit bosses you see at other gambling meccas.

Common JAM, can't you give us the details on some of the finer points of Keith and Frankie arguments. I didn't see you guys in Vegas, but i got to see Frankie put a show on for a few hours in the ACTION room, and it was something to behold. Frankie can talk with the best of them.
