I use a 1 gallon shop vac with the 4 inch brush-less attachment. (black and decker I think) It works pretty good, but I imagine there are better ones out there.
I have not suffered any damage to my cloth by doing this.

I assume that cloths that are glued on can be vacumned equally as well as those that are strectched and tacked?
