Handmade custom cue questions

"ill be your huckleberry
Hello I am new to this board and was wondering if I could pick some of your brains. I currently am playing with a viking and a balabushka cue along with a sledgehammer break cue and want to move up to a handmade cue but do not have the huge money to spend. I was wondering what the best one off cue is for short money and also if anyone has one they are interested in selling. I do not mean to sound cheap but but I do not have a ton of cash unless I can get rid of the Balabushka. I am looking to spend around $300.00 but would consider others in that area.
Any help would be great.

Thank you
Doc

I don't think you can get a good custom cue for 300....even used custom cues starts around 700.

You may want to try a nice production cue for that money. Schon or Mezz cue are good hitting cues.

I'd like to know where you get a Schon for $300..

If you put a 1 in front of your spending limit you'll be in the price range of top end makers plain janes. I would look at Andy Gilbert's cues bang for the buck he is about the best to buy at the moment . Andy is a player and the hit comes first with him and his cues ... Bill

Balabushka would be a wise start ! that might get you up to $425.00 which is still a bit low to find a straight good quality "custom" cue. I might suggest researching Jacoby's web site they have some decent inexpensive low volume cues and a few used higher quality offerings or if you would like to upgrade look at McDermotts website for a high quality production cue with a lifetime warranty and a great hit and feel! :D

Kevin Varney makes sneakies in that range and he's got a reputation for making good hitting cues. Send him a PM. He posts here under his name.

And Richard Hsu has some plain jane's for $300 on his site if you don't want that sneaky look. He also has a good reputation for making good hitting cues.

Lots of good customs available around that range on the used market....
They will be basic cues, nothing fancy.

Can usually find a fairly nice Joss cue in that range too, as a bonus they hit good.

Is there something you don't like about your current cues? I'd try to figure out what it is you like and dislike before buying another cue.

Well I guess it is kind of a dumb thought I would be able to pick a one off handmade cue up for that kind of money. I love my viking just hate the stock shaft..too much deflection and my game took a brake not in a good way when I bought the Balabushka so maybe Ill sell the Balabushka and buy a shaft for the viking. Does anyone have any feedback on DP Dale Perry cues they look really nice and are very reasonably priced on ebay.

I thank all of you very much for your very fast responses
It is a pleasure meeting you all and am sure I will talk with you all alot

Can tell you why I don't own a dp. Years ago his cues were high end, had a good resale value, in decent demand. Then one day he started selling on ebay, undercut all of his dealers. Price and most say quality dropped at that time. Resale value dropped to near nothing.

So with the dp you may very well end up with a good hitting, nicely built cue. But you won't be able to resale it for a bag of peanuts.

I can offer you a shannon cue, excellent shape, two shafts, mori tips, cocobolo and tulipwood 3/8x10 pin wood to wood joint, straight together and apart. $300 I can send pics if you are interested.

Yes please send me pics. How is the cue I have not heard of shannon cues not that I am very knowlegable on custom cues anyway.

Hey Doc Ill try to round up a camera. If you want info on Shannon Cues just do a Google search. Shannon Cues is a business name-the cue maker is Leonard Lares. This is a great hitting cue and beautiful contrasting woods. There is not a blemish on it. I just got too many ques. If you want to jump up to the $700 range Ive got a great ebony-ivory CK que which is a steal. CK is Chester Crick in Illonois and is Googable as well.

Okay. If you're only willing to spend $300 to get a custom cue made, why do you want to buy one? Is there something about your current cues that you don't like?

Since you already have two very decent cues, I would suggest to save more money and get what you really want. BTW, I think the Balabushka Cues when they first came out were some of the higher volume produced cues you could get your hands on.
