Hanging Lights From High Ceilings

Biloxi Boy

Man With A Golden Arm
I still do not have a table, but if I ever find one, I am faced with what I consider to be a significant challenge -- a 15 foot tall ceiling. I would like to develop my plan now rather than once I have the table and I end up futzing around with no light. Anyone have any experience with such an application? Any tips or special considerations that I need to prepare for?

The "room" is a portion of a larger room with a vaulted ceiling. The closest wiring is two fans/lights, with a "multi" switch, but they are 10 - 15 feet away from where the table light would drop from. I have this figured for a terrible "fishing" expedition unless I resort to conduit. But it worries me and this is why I am asking. I am open suggestions. And, of course, any plan will ultimately face scrutiny from the "Big Boss".

I also had to hang my light before the table arrived and my ceiling slopes from about 7 feet to 12 feet. The ceiling fan was in the way, so the electrician installed the light on a slanted roof, moved the fan over the living area, and hooked up the power to a wall switch. Came out great. It may be worth hiring an electrician, as they can quickly determine the easiest way to do it.

Although I usually do my own wiring, the last light I installed I opted for an electrician.

What would have taken me a day to do, only took a pro 2 hours. Very little drywall repair, and I chose to do that myself.

Things to consider.
Making sure the junction box will be mounted so that it is centered above the table if possible, and able to support the weight of the light. The chains, cables or lamp rod have other options for support but the last one I installed connected to a cover plate attached to the vaulted ceiling box.

My "room" is much like DJ Keys. What I am hearing as far as wiring is hire an electrician. Probably good advice. Anyone have any input on chains vs. cables vs. lamp rods vs. any other possibilities?

I have chains but I've considered trying high test fishing line.

The table was in place first, a 7ft Diamond.
I placed large self adhesive felt pads under the feet, the pads were 3/16” thick.
Since it was on hardwood floors it slides fairly easily.

Once the light was in I slid the table to the side and hung the light. The junction box was about 14 ft higher than the floor.
I used a lazer on the ceiling so the cover plate would be square with the table. Since I have the light chains hanging from the cover plate I wanted to make sure that the light would not be out of alignment with the table.

i too have a vaulted ceiling
i hired an electrician to hang the light
i dont know if they had to go into the attic or not
i recently had to change the bulbs in by diamond light
the electrician i hired who also happened to own a pool room in the past decided to replace the bulbs and ballast with LED bulbs with an internal ballast which required some rewiring in side the box but also had to attach and reattach wires around the circular mouting on the ceiling on the right as you look at the screen
he said it would have been better if the first electrician had installed a "box" (i dont recall exactly what he said so he didnt have to thread some wires thru small opening around the mounting
if you show this to an electrician he would know what iam talking about as i may not have explained exactly
bottom on installation ask the electrician about ease of rewiring if needed
as you can see the wiring is not very visible as it is coiled within the loops of the chain link

In case it has escaped any of y'all, I can tend to get anal about some things and pool related items are high on the list. So please bear with me. I have plenty of leeway for the table placement within the room, but I am concerned that the positions of the rafters will dictate the location of the light within the room. Some flexibility in the attachment points on the light frame would help with this issue. I am afraid I am missing something or overthinking everything. My hope is to take advantage of my "delivery delay" problem through planning. What I really want to avoid is a table on the way or on site and me being faced with decisions or unanticipated compromises.

BBB is right on regarding running the power through the hanging chain. I made an error and totally forgot about placement with regard to beams to support the weight of the light. It came out "okay", just not a nice as I would have liked.

My comments posted last year in the "...Your Home Rooms" thread. Link below to post #1995.

If you’re really anal and worried about your power cord showing I saw a different way of doing it years ago but not sure how he did it. There were two support cables coming down from ceiling attached to each side of light. Each cable looked like 3 small vinyl or rubber coated cables pigtailed(braided) together. He said on one side it was actually 3 cables in a pigtail pattern, but on the other side were two cables and power cord, of same color and diameter, pigtailed together .. cool looking and you couldn’t tell where cord was at all
