Happy World Elephant Day!!!!

They are not, folks just like to deflect. It's as if more than one problem can't be worked on at the same time ?

There are organizations, churches, government departments, etc working on reducing "crack babies", and they have, so I'm pretty sure we should NOT drown puppies and kittens because the crack problem has not been 100% eradicated ??

There is no logic to their arguments, and pt109 is one of AZB best posters and a nice guy to boot, and yet, Yet, he scratched on this one. I'm very disappointed in his response. I"m perplexed, this perplexes me a lot.

Hey! I scratched too, didn't I? C'mon, I'm certain I scratched.
You want me to drown a few kittens, or maybe a crack baby, or two? I'll do it.
Anything for a scratch.
By-the-way. What the hell is a scratch?

There will always be starving children and crack babies to worry about. The elephants are almost gone.

At the turn of the 20th century, there were a few million African elephants and about 100,000 Asian elephants. Today, there are an estimated 450,000 - 700,000 African elephants and between 35,000 - 40,000 wild Asian elephants.

I don't know what almost gone means in your book but those numbers in my book don't represent almost gone or anything close

Minus roughly 40,000 a year to poachers. At the current rate, that gives them about 20 years at best... Yeah, I'd say that's almost gone, especially for a species that has been around in one form or another for 55 million years.

That's providing thier not reproducing , so that number will go up not down ,,
So again thier not almost gone or anything close to it

Their gestation period is one of the longest in the animal kingdom, and they only give birth to ONE offspring at a time, this limits the ability to reproduce.

And yes, they are endangered. If you think a few a few hundred thousand elephants left on the planet is a lot you're daffy.

Elephants are the closet things to having a dinosaur around (sharks were actually around when Dinosaurs walked the earth), and have been around for 55 million years, yet, we have a half million elephants left, but we have 6 billion people ????

THere has to be hundreds of millions of dogs on the planet, yet, I would not tolerate anyone to abuse, torture or kill a dog because there are literally a zillion of them. In fact, I'd stop anyone from doing it, and I would ensure they would be unable to ever do it again... but hey, that's just me, I don't own the place, I just live here.

You do realize they still have leagle hunting and culling of Elephants to keep thier population down in certain area's , fact is along with poaching shrinking habitat is a big problem also many of them die from lack of food and or water , older ones because they grind thier teeth down to where they can't eat another contributing factor in their deaths
What doesn't contribute to thier deaths is the sale of pool cues with ivory in them ,,...

RJ, why don't you give us a break and come down from your ivory tower. Wikipedia is there for all of us.

P.S. The ivory tower reference was intended, by-the-way.

Not sure what you are talking about, i don't need WIKI do know some simple facts about majestic creatures. I stated a few facts, not sure that puts me in an ivory tower, if folks hate facts, there is not much I can do about that.

It's obvious folks are not using WIKI or anything else for that matter, otherwise there would no argument here.

Just because something is legal does not make it right. THere are no "out of control" elephant populations that need to be culled. of course, when companies can charge someone $10K and up to $50K to hunt and kill an elephant is certainly is not being "culled", otherwise it would not be that expensive.

The leading cause of death is the hunting for their ivory, plain and simple. There is no way around it. Not just for cues, but for jewelry and lots of other pretty things that nobody needs.

So, if German Shepard bone was the replacement for ivory, as it had the same "hit" and feel and look, let me know when Americans would allow gunning/beating/drowning helpless dogs to build jewelry with ??

Pool cues with ivory are not the problem, its all the "goods" with ivory that drive the demand. Demand will never go away, because humans continue to need stuff they don't need, its' what we do, "first world" problems. Like I said, I don't own the place, I just live here, and respect nature too much to destroy a majestic creature for sport or jewelry.

You know, RJ, elephants, and all other wild creatures should be left alone to evolve in piece, and those animals that we have domesticated should be protected and cared for.
Along with that I believe in controlled hunting, and the humane slaughter of livestock for human consumption. :)

I'm don't believe I've said anything that disagrees with this, have I ?? "controlled" hunting for animals that you eat, is one thing, hunting for animals we don't eat, bears, tigers and elephants, rhinos, etc. is what I don't like.

I've said all I'm going to say on the matter. If you need me I'll be in the bathroom. :grinning-moose:

You know, RJ, we got a lot of problems with society....
...so my point is we have to have priorities.

I have been lucky enough to have met an immense number of good people in my life.
But people in large numbers have a horrible record in history,,,,people in any kind of mob
will do things that no sane individual will do.
So I'm not going to worry too much about elephants and seals and such when we have
people that are inhumane to their fellow man.
I'll save my giving and concern for the Salvation Army and Doctors Without Borders.
When we solve all the people problems....the other problems might've disappeared.

BTW, I hate ivory in cues....(a player preference)....every top cue I've owned has had the
ivory ferrules taken off....and I do not hunt for sport...though I have friends that do.

Our biggest problem in this life is to take care of ourselves.....
...then maybe we can take care of other things.

Our biggest problem in this life is to take care of ourselves.....
...then maybe we can take care of other things.

Actually, our biggest problem in life is not to take care of ourselves, if that was the case, nobody would run into a burning building to save a child, or pull someone out of a burning car.

People problems are not the only problems to worry about... most of the people problems were caused by,,, wait of it....people. There is more food produced to feed the world over, but because of politics, greed and just sheer stupidity is does not get to the folks that need it now.

Thus, in your world, we should not feed a starving dog, or save a cat that is stuck in a trap, or help the local humane society... your world is pretty myopic. Because I'm sure when every "people problem" is solved (which will never happen) we can then, and only then, concentrate on other problems.

There was a video posted by Darren Appleton on Facebook regarding the brutality of the Chinese when it comes to dogs, and how they are treated. He showed a video of 3 teenagers, hitting a small puppy with big sticks, and when the dog could not walk, they picked up rocks and threw them at his head. While he lying dying, the kid picks it by the tail, holds it up high and walks away like he was a victor of some sorts.

But in your world, you would have just turned your back and walked away, because it was not a "people" problem ? Just sad indeed. You live your way, and I'll live my way. I think mine is much better.

All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing." (Edmund Burke)

The above quote does NOT quantify that all other problems are fixed, or that you have time, or that you're busy right now, etc. etc. etc.

G'night PT.

If your going Lib please come with some facts maybe just maybe someone will listen
The experts in the field know that in certain areas there is not enough food to substain the Elephat population they hardly sleep and eat 300 pounds of food a day while killing 15 acres + of habitat a day along the way , if not culled they simply can't survive in those areas plain and simple

ah, but all that inhumane treatment IS a people problem.
....we have to smarten up.

One of the things I retained from my upbringing...;(no holier than thou thinking here....
...I'm a very imperfect creature)
...but we ALL need to read this every day.

I never said there are NO areas of danger for elephants, just that MOST elephants are killed for their ivory, more so than any other reason. It's a fact of life...no biggie, if you think the slaughter of a majestic creatures is fine for sport and/or making jewelry, I don't wanna change your mind.

Oh, wake up. Elephants are NOT starving themselves to extinction. Do some research and then come back and talk intelligently on a subject you know nothing about except what you read from a pool forum. geez pt, I really thought you were smarter than this, I guess your sly little comments from time to time were just masking you really don't have much else to say. My last post of this thread. Enjoy your ignorance, I hear it's bliss.
