has anyone added taper bars to harbour freight 36inch between centers metal lathe, bought them or made them.

I've worked on a couple metal lathes with taper bars. One was a harbor freight 12x36 lathe and one is my own that I modified similar to that one, but mine is a Birmingham 13x40. The taper bars and brackets were both made, not bought as taper bars.

Harbour Freight Lathe

I have a Central Machinery aka Harbor Freight 13/40 metal lathe.
I had to add a taper bar of my own making. Are you buying a lathe or trying to put on a taper bar?
Bill

Your setup is awesome. I was at my friends Jacob shop and he has the same setup on his HF 12x36 lathe.
I will be getting a new metal lathe and I want your taper bar setup. However I noticed that it would be awesome if you could extend your setup 2 or 3" on each side since if you are not paying attention when running the router the bearings will pass the taper bar and will make a deeper cut on a shaft or butt.

Ah yes, the old not paying attention thing will get you every time Mr. Ben.
The No Womens allowed in the tree house rule will take care of that.

question

Why have two taper bars each(rough and finish) for handle and shafts?? Aren't you using the same taper for each process?? Aren't they redundant?? I understand the shaft and the handle have different profiles. What am I missing?? Thanks in advance.

Someone else asked why not make them longer than 31.5" the main reason is my milling machine has a max travel of 31.75".

I made two taper bars for each because the rough taper is a striaght taper and it is a backer with set screws for the finish bars that are adjustable.I rough my shafts to a cone/straight taper in one day and then let them stress relieve for a couple of months before I start the compound taper.

Same here.
I rough my handles and shafts at around .010" per inch.
It's simple and works for me. Most of the time they have offset centers so a straight angle taper on the first pass works for me .
I guess you can just have one bar to rough handles and shafts.
You just have to remember to flip one of them .

If you are not paying attention, you will crash on the chuck.
Rig up a cutoff switch so that doesn't happen.

Danny hope the pics help, hand made around 50.00 that was 19 years ago. the pic with the bearing and the black delrin is on the shaft bar once the delrin is removed it's on the lower bar for butts. i have many hours running this lathe, i do run a fan on the motor to keep it cool. this lathe is ran off V belts so drilling holes in the front of the lathe was no big deal, but if it has an oil sump be careful mounting the front bracket. if you would like more pics would be glad to post. Jeff
