Hardest 2 or 3 ball runout situation

For 8-ball, take ball-in-hand. Will result in a stalemate since no one will take a shot since they will lose.

I wouldn't consider that stalemate... Given that situation, that is where you'd use your brain a little.

O.K. help my pea brain out! The 8-ball is in the middle of the pocket as close to the lip of the pocket as it can get without falling in and frozen to the object ball. Assume ball-in-hand:

If you're on the 8-ball, there's no way to touch it first without trying a jump shot (which would probably wind up with a foul -- that is, scratch in pocket or cue ball off the table)?

If you're on the object ball, there's no way to touch it without the 8-ball falling into the pocket? There is no room to set the cue ball inside the object ball next to the 8-ball. Say the pocket mouth is 5" wide and the balls are 2 1/4" diameter -- that leaves at most 2 3/4" / 2 = 1 3/8" (or less) on either side of the 8-ball.

Perhaps I'll need to see a rule book... assuming you've got ball in hand and the worst you can do is scratch couldnt you take that scratch? Where in the rule book does it say you have to use the playing surface? Nipping the top of the three off the rail (literally) could break up the two (without compromising the 8-ball) enough to create another awkward shot for the opponent, no?

edit: When I say scratch I only mean not hitting your own ball first.... some people at some bars have told me that if you miss the 8 completely when you're on the 8 you've lost the game lol... and some have said a scratch on the 8 is not considered a loss of game. Need a rule book!!!!

This type of layout on any two balls always bothers me. I know it should be routine but the scratch in the side always bothers me. Even with ball in hand.

It's hard to answer this post because you can set up those absurd situations that come up one in a million times and nobody has a hope of winning. More interesting are the situations that come up all the time and are still really hard to get out from. I think that's what dawg was shooting for.

This is a brutal layout for 9 ball. Treetopped and straight in, almost no hope of getting on the 8, and if you just cinch it you can't even see the 8. It's a bit far off the rail (and from the pocket) for a railfirst attempt and your railfirst contact point is probably right around the side pocket nub. Good luck even making an effective safety.

Vs. the ghost, do you roll in the 7, do your best kick on the 8, and pray?

Hm,

no 8-,9- or 10-ball runout- but this situation was really delicious...lol.
Straight-Pool-match til 100- opponent needs 5 balls to win, i am at the table, ran already 3 racks, 8 balls left to win- that s what happened after the break-shot, njam-njam.....now i can laugh about it...lol
