Hardtimes One-pocket event

Confused

Check out the brackets , the link is on the az main page. Dennis lost his first match to ex Santa Cruz resident and great player Jeff Gregory, 3-0.
Go Jeff. From everybody at Fast Eddy's

Got confused though... The bracket says Gregory 3 and Orcullo 0 but when you look at the next match Orcullo is pitted against Kiamco (which means Gregory lost in his match against Orcullo)... Hope AZ will fix it.

kudos to hard times, and to tom, for such a great week-- even just so far.

from the constant action (more action than barking!), ring games, back- to- back nightly mini tourneys, and not to forget the current main event, it feels like a pool player's version of either a circus or the state fair.

Tom IS the MAN! He's been livin' like a kid in a candy store, ever since moving to Sactown from Cincy! :D He does a great job for Hard Times, and everybody loves him! Keep up the good work Tommy!

I looked at the brackets too and Orcullo is listed as losing to Jeff Gregory 3 to 0. However, this statement was also on the write-up in the front page of azbilliards.com:

"Almost all of the first two rounds were complete at the time of this writing, and the winners side includes Tyler Edey, John Macias, Billy Palmer, Tony Chohan, Mark Haddad, Warren Kiamco and Dennis Orcollo. "

So, did Orcullo win or lose against Jeff Gregory? If he did lose, then maybe he is not good at all at one-pocket. He still my bet though at the upcoming 9-ball tournament from June 17 to 19.

im jealous

man this sounds like such a great tournament .............to bad this thing is al the way over in cali..............................I think liljohn is annoying when he is hammering out the details of match. Yeah, sometimes it gets pretty weird, but remember-- these guys are doing this for a livelihood, they're not doing it for beer money. Half the time a match is over before the players ever get to the table. What appears to be going on is oftentimes not what really is going on. Each player looks for an edge-- anything that gives them a little advantage. So there's going to be stalling, lying, moaning, conning, and whining. The best money players never agree unless they thing they've got the best of it. Frankly Lil John often seems to give up the nuts, just to get into action. That'll probably change as he gets more seasoned.

I understand the angles doc......im not that green lol.........its hard to put into text the situaiton with out going into lengthy "he said" and on on on....................it just seems like he could have moved more smoothly through the sitiuation thats all. Perhaps as he gets older he will develope this part of the game more

"Baby Face" Frank Nordman will bet it up, if he thinks he's got the right game. Several years ago he played my friend Tinsley for some dough in San Francisco at Hollywood Billiards but he had the worst of it as Tinsley was hitting the ball strong strong strong and just kept getting out on him. They were playing nine ball on fairly tight pockets. I won a few hundred side betting with Filiping Gene on the sets! It sounds like he plays one pocket very well, he's got the heart for it!...........Marc

Down to the final 8 almost.

Updated brackets will be up later tonight.

Dennis Orcullo defeated Jeff Gregory, Warren Kiamco and then lost to Denver's Mark Haddad (formally of the Bay Area and Sacramento) 3-1.

Mark played good and his experience was too much for Dennis. Dennis went to the left side and had to play fellow countryman Gandy Valle and won 3-1.

Dennis plays tomorrow (Thursday at Noon) against the Bay Area's legend Billy Palmer. This ought to be a great match.

Tomorrow's other one loss match will pit Ed Ames vrs the Tyler Edey Santos' JR match (in progress when I left tied 1-1) Scott Smith's turn to close tonight.

On the Winners side it's down to Tony Chohan vrs. Mark Haddad and Richard "Big Daddy" Burns and Lance Salazar.

The finals are scheduled for 930 pm (local pdt) and should be exciting as always.

Last night just before I left, all the tables in the tournament room were filled with action. Cheap and expensive sets were everywhere. I was told that it stayed packed until around 6 this morning.

We had a couple of no-shows (late nite action victims) for the noon matches.

Thanks for all the kind and supporting posts, this Jamboree is every bit as good as the previous events.

The Philipinos, Austrailian, Canadian and even players from Mississippi, make up a great cast of charactors for this event. Something is always being stirred up for action and the tournament matches are fabulous.

And we have a 9 ball event starting Friday.. this is just HEAVEN... I'll share some pictures later.

Tinsley Johnson is one of the notable absences, along with Amar Kang. Did he have to work? I played Tinsley many times when I used to live and play out of Eureka. He's always tough. Tell him Art Tripp said hello.

Thanks~ Doc

I'll do that Art...Yes Tinsley had to work and is very sorry to miss this event. Ever played 1p with Tinsley? He plays it just like he does 9b, with no fear, even though he'd be far outclassed by the top notch 1p players he would be fun to watch...........Marc

Yeah, he's definitely a 9-ball specialist. But really, there's not much one-hole played in Calif. BTW, any tournament updates from Hardtimes? They're very slow in updating the brackets. ~Doc

Not much 1-hole played in Calif? I'd beg to differ. Billy Palmer, Tony Chohan, Rich G., AZB's own Wayne Pullen, Tang Hoa; the 1-pocket scene is pretty good as far as I've ever been able to tell, especially in Southern California. Compared to Manhattan it's almost like the only game even played in CA.

That would be like history repeating itself, the new Filipino kid on the block here in the States winning every single event he enters! It makes for a nice story. That's for sure!:p

I will really be surprised if Dennis does real good in 1P. 1P is hardly played here in the Philippines so Dennis, Warren and Gandy are really just learning on the fly there. I believe though that the next US trip will be different as I anticipate a surge in interest in the game when those guys return. And this is going to be because of Efren and Dennis' rivalry in money matches. They started out with 9, then 10 then rotation and the last 7 meetings were all Dennis. I'm sure Dennis will want to try Efren in 1P next and this will spark interest in the other players who idolize this ex-Muro-ami (non-breathing apparatus assisted) deep sea fisherman turned pool champion.

Hart Times last year

I understand Manalo won in Hard Times last year after winning the Reno tournament. Did he win in 1 pocket or 9 ball? Aside from Efren, Parica and maybe Alex Pagulayan, who are the other Filipinos who are good at 1-pocket?

Manalo won the 9-ball event, but forfeitted the 1-pocket even last year.

My guess will be Sambajon, Alcano, Victor Ignacio, Lorrie deLeon, Danny Petralba and Alex of Riverside because of their exposure to the game. 1P is hardly played here except when some foreign players are here and those are against Efren, Django, Alex or Luat. All the rest prefer the quicker disciplines but that soon will change after hearing some action stories from Dennis and Yang-yang(Gandy). Plus a lot more of the newer breed has better chances of getting to go overseas.

He's doing very well, seems to be learning on the fly.
