Has anyone bought this new book?

Buy them all

Buy all the books you can afford. No one can recommend the perfect one.
I have found that you get a certain amount of knowledge from every book you read on pool. Only so much sticks to me anyway, from any particular book. Gain all the knowledge you can from books, tapes, dvd's, etc., live streams. You get the picture. Just do it.

If so, what did you think of it? Was the advice good? Were the practice drills useful?

I see there's a whole section on 8-ball. Do you think this has helped your game?

Feedback gratefully received :)

Must be that "Mad Cow Disease" but my muddled mind seems to recall Ewa Lawrence mentioning her book "Pool for Dummies" on a TV broadcast. Was surprised not to see her name on this! Does anyone else remember this or am I really losing it?

I personally never buy a book with the word "Dummy" in it only because it seems the series wastes alot of space with bad jokes. I'm not sure what you are looking for but for basics I liked:

Play Your Best Pool http://www.amazon.com/Play-Your-Bes...=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1269456623&sr=1-5

or

Brynes Standard Book of Pool http://www.amazon.com/Byrnes-Standa...=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1269456704&sr=1-1

Earlier someone said there is no bad book, which is correct, but there are some that are better than others.

I read the Ewa Lawrence book, which is a competing series... the "complete idiot's guide". No idea about this one.

But in general I think the dummy series of books do a pretty good job at their goal... taking a guy from total amateur (i.e. a "dummy") to a certain level of competence.

They aren't promising to take you any further than that, and they definitely don't. But they do get you to the point where you're at least not a dummy anymore.

You can get better faster with something like the 99 critical shots and it's like 1/3rd the size.

Wow thanks! I'm glad you posted that. Now at least I understand my confusion, being both a dummy and an idiot, I'm told.
