Has anyone tried the new G-Core Shaft?

Hmmm..

This off center of the threading just seems a bit odd to me. McDermott must know how to drill a hole correctly. Are you buying these shafts from a reputable dealer, one authorized by McDermott? Have you contacted McDermott about the issue and if so what was their response?? Are the shafts you are buying seconds perhaps??? I am just curious not trying to stir up any issues here..

It is odd. When i did the review I didnt notice that it was off center just knew that the threads were tapped out great, real tight fit all way down and tightened down great.I got mine from an authorized mcdermott and diamond dealer had his name etc verified by mcdermott. So I contacted Mcdermott and they were great as always Mcdermott said they would look into it and that i would have to do if i wanted a precise fit was send then the butt of my cue and they would match a G-Core to my joint at no charge. And i could send it at anytime that was convenient to me because it was backed by lifetime warranty.

Thanks

Thanks for the review JL.
I have been looking at these shafts also. I just rec'd my first 3/8 x 10 cue and I'm not super-happy with the shaft that came with it, so I was looking for a replacement.
I have not been on the Pred. or Ob bandwagon and switched out my stock shafts.....mainly because I have been happy with my stock shafts.

With this new cue, I wanted to try an "aftermarket" shaft and thought about this G Core in the 12.5, just like you.
I have owned many cues in the 25yrs I have been playing and once I got my Scruggs 20yrs ago, I have been playing with Triangle tips.(Since that's what Tim uses, I got used to them) Now all of my playing cues have Triangle tips. The tip on the G Core is an Everest, right? How would you compare that to the Triangle?
The local cue repair/shop guy is a "diamond dealer" for McD, but doesn't have these in stock yet to demo, so it will be a leap of faith.
If you could answer the tip question and this.....is it woth the $100+/$150?
Thanks!!!!
-Eric.

Hey Eric,
Yes triangle tips are my pick also for a non laminated tip. Ive used the triangles exclusively for 17 years. Molavia and Moori for laminated tips for past 3 years.
The Everest on the G-Core i do not like. It depends on the construction and stiffness of shaft how some tips react especially with LD shafts IMO. Its definitely not the feel of a triangle we are used to on a old school shaft. It sounds like we like close to same feel. So i would suggest also the Tiger X with a Triangle or Moori [M]. I will put a Triangle on the G-core today and try it. Let ya know the results compared to the everest.

...I had to double check also. They are an authorized Diamond Dealer and these are supposed to be 1st cut. I had to admit, their customer service(Discount Billiards, Stockton, CA) was impeccable, just as McDermotts' was as well. I guess my only issue is where is the craftsmenship? I provided a link to a couple pics (poor quality pics, but show the problem) ...guess I was looking for more instant gratification. I'm generally used to higher end cues, not to take anything away from McDermott, so I was a little surprised at how both shafts fit. I only paid $100 for a nice wrapless they had, so I said what the heck. For an additional $120, I thought the G-Core would be nice, even though I prefer a softer tip.

...Thanks for the info JL. I had already sent back the 2nd shaft prior to finding this out........ maybe someday I will try it again.

Wow

Well after all is said and done that fit looks BAD, there is no way I would have been happy with that either. I think if I do buy one I'll send my cue to McDermott and have them fit it there. Too bad you had to go thru all this BS.

Ok, I replaced the everest with a Triangle. For those of you wondering, Yes it is a black fiber back pad. Not part of the ferrule construction. So i removed the black pad also. The pad makes the tip way to high. This changed the hit tremendous. It is very much softer now but of course still stiff. Would have been great choice for stock tip. I will continue to use the Triangle as my choice on this shaft.
Hope this helps.
Yeah that is bad 3Cushion. Mine is nothing like that just little off center.
I will try to post pics of mine tonight.

Better

Yea that looks better than the other pics for sure. I'd still think about having it sanded flat on a lathe and see if that makes it fit tight all the way around. Good Luck with it!!

Thanks for the review.

Quick question: Is McDermott intending this G-core to be a unified REPLACEMENT for the Intimidator shafts? Has anyone been about to do a comparison TO the intimidators?

No no no. The I shafts are still their top level shafts. They come with their cues over $900. G-Core is the intermediate range, comes on cues $300-900.

My impressions of the G-Core are a little different. I picked up a M94A "Slingblade" when they first came out to try the G-Core. After nearly a month of play, I think my 13.0mm G-Core is significantly softer hitting than my 12.75mm 314-2; both with dime shaped Everest tips. I noticed right away that the G-Core shaft has quite a bit more flex than the 314-2. The G-Core also has higher deflection which is very noticeable in play (I haven't assembled any quantitative data to that regard).

That said, I'm not entirely down on the G-Core, it's a great shaft especially for the money and is one I'd much rather have than the standard non-G-Core McD shaft. The radial consistency is excellent, it's deflection is less than their non-G-Core shafts and the fit on my cue was perfect.

I've grown accustomed to the 314-2 and my only complaint with it (besides the fact that it warped on me) was that I wanted a slightly softer and lower resonating frequency hit (those two characteristics may be one in the same, I dunno). I hoped the G-Core would fit the bill, unfortunately not as the hit is too soft and the increased deflection took a while to get used to.

I ordered an OB1 to replace my warped 314-2. I hope it's characteristics are the median between the 314-2 and the G-Core with good resistance to warping. I travel a lot, so my cues are often subjected to quick changes in temp and humidity. I'll follow up with my impressions of where the G-Core compares to the OB1.

Not impressed

I would have to say I'm quite dissapointed in the G-Core shaft. Other than the looks of the ferrule, which i like, the shaft is just like all of the other FLIMSY cheap shafts in the lower end McDermotts. I purchased a nice wrapless, 20oz, 12.5mm w/ the G-Core. The cue feels great, looks great... just did not meet my expectations in their "new technology":(

After seeing the lower price I was quite interested in trying one, the dealer a few towns over had one and was able to try it out and really liked it. I emailed Mcdermott about having the rings matched to my Mcdermott MG31, with the cost of that plus sending my butt in to get the correct fit its going to be well over $200 which has me deffinatly considering sticking to the stock shaft or at that price reconsidering the Predator.

This may be a very old thread but I've moved around quite a bit on shafts lately and out of all that I played, the G-Core shafts play excellent. Comparing radial consistency to any of the spliced shafts is obviously apples to oranges but deflection with my custom taper was actually extremely low and even at 12.25MM it was stiff. They do play soft until you get the tip seasoned and shaped down to about 4-1/2 layers but almost every tip is going to feel that way initially regardless of LD manufacturer or model.

For the money, this is one of the most solid and top quality shafts you'll find.
