Has anyone tried using threaded maple dowell in place of steel weight bolts for weight addition or reduction? I have a joss i just got it is probably from early 90's the weight bolt is lot bigger than my friends joss not sure of size, his is 3/8x16 i think. Mine is tapped pretty deep probably 7" with 3" weight bolt. It is too heavy for me. I would like it about 1.5oz lighter. I took out the bolt and it was front heavy. I cut half the bolt off put it in still front heavy. I thought maybe if i got a maple dowell and had it threaded, slotted and cut it off 6" and installed it that it may work even better than a metal bolt. So here is the question what would the 6" dowell weigh as compared to the 3" metal bolt?
Wouldnt this distribute the weight better toward the rear?
 
Maybe someone else can chime in with the weight ratio, but I'm guessing it would take considerbly more than 6" of maple to equal the 3" steel bolt.
 
Actually i want about half the weight of the bolt but distributed more toward the butcap.

No. It will make it more front heavy. To move a already built cues weight to the rear you must move the weight to the rear. If the half length bolt gives the cue the final weight you want but it is still to front heavy, then you must move it farther to the rear for more leverage. Since you probably don't want the bolt sticking out of the rear of the cue you need to use something that is shorter than your bolt but weighing the same amount. You may be able to go from a 3/8 X 3 inch bolt to say a 3/4 X 1 inch bolt or else plug the rear leaving a short 3/4 inch cavity and fill with melted lead or such.

Ok i see so i would just need to say drill and tap out the butt to say 3/4 about 2" in then install the 1" bolt and bumper. Is this right?

If you remove the bolt & it is front heavy & still too heavy, you will not be able to achieve what you want. Sell the cue & buy a more evenly balanced cue...JER

I believe the weight bolt is 1/2-13 which was Josses standard ( and McDermott) thread for a long time. You can buy any size of that bolt (hex cap style) from the hardware store. Would suggest you just cut off another 1/2 in. of the bolt and try that before you got to a lot of unnecessary work. You'll be very close to what you want. Joss put a very long thread cavity so someone can play with the balance point very easily.
