There was a guy down around Virginia Beach (I believe) that is apparently doing time over issues like this one.
I think his name was David something or other...maybe not, but someone will remember. There was a thread on here ref it at one time.

This is some great info Lisa. I am assuming my situation might be part of the fire they are speaking of. I am definetly going to use your advice and report the guy to the FBI, locally and in his home area. Thanks for all the great advice and helping others to be aware so they don't end up in the same situation I did.

Very good information! I would add to keep accurate track of emails/payment information/ect for any internet transactions. I also use a credit card to "double down" against bad deals. Most credit cards carry fraud protection.
These scammers use the "hit and run" SOP and reporting them is paramount to help track them down and make them pay the price for stealing ways.

I am very new to az, and I have been ripped off on e-bay twice, although it was ten years ago. I love coming to the site and looking at all the great cues, and other things, for sale. But I have to admit that I have been a little nervous to try to purchase anything due to the possibility of being taken. So, this information really helps. I also think it is really great that people like Lisa take the time to gather this type of information and arm the rest of us. The older I get, the more my opinion of humanity seems to drop. It is very refreshing to see people actually caring about others, especially when they are complete strangers. Thank you Lisa, and every one else who added info to this thread.
Now, at the high risk of sounding like a completely green idiot to this site, can someone please explain "bump", "morning bump", "bump to the top", and any other variation on the bumping motif? I'm seriously confused about this.

That was David Huff, Joe....and yes, he finally did get nailed and did time for ripping people off on here, eBay, and in his local area. It took enough people acting to get the authorities attention...but once they did, they did follow through.

Braden....some days the Forums can get pretty busy with new threads and often they can get pushed back several pages in a matter of hours. The 'bump' brings those threads back to the first page again. It helps to keep some threads from getting 'lost' or buried where people will not immediately see them.

When I sold on Ebay I had a policy that checks and money orders must clear before the product would be sent out. Sometime after that I read that checks can be reversed up to a year after they have been issued and cashed. I do not know if this is federal law or bank policy but the story mentioned that the money had been deducted from the account holder's account pending the investigation of the reversal claim.
So the moral of the story is that once a money order is cashed then it's good but once a check is cashed it might still be reversed and deducted from your account.
At some point after that I began to ask for a driver's license copy with the check and the amount of people who paid by check dried up considerably. Eventually I stopped offering to take checks simply because I did not want to deal with depositing them.
Interestingly if the seller is able to take e-checks then those are much harder to reverse from the buyer's side. This is also known as an ACH, Automated Clearing House transaction and it is what you sign up for when you allow a monthly bill pay to be deducted directly from your account. Be very careful with anyone who offers to let you pay by "e-check" because when you do you are giving them all of the information they need to set up an ACH deduction which will cause you a problem if they fraudulently use it to siphon money from your account. Because the bank presumes that you volunteered for this they do not offer you the same level of protection as when you use a credit card or even a debit/credit card to purchase. Best is to check with your bank to see what sort of protection they offer against ACH fraud. Best practice is to NEVER give out your bank account information to any company who you are not 100% sure of. Because when you do then you have given that entity an easy way to drain your account since they have all the information to set up an ACH deduction.
