Hawaiian Brian's

I finally went to the famous Hawaiian Brian's. It might just be my favorite pool room now next to Hard Times. This is in spite of the tables playing sort of funny. The pockets are big, but the humidity makes the rails really, really bouncy. Because of this (or the way the pockets are cut ... or a combination of the two), balls will rattle and jaw up if you don't hit them well. The people there are super cool and all of the local players love action. I wish I could have made it there more than just two times, but it's tough to convince your wife that it's okay to go hang out at the pool room while you're on vacation, I guess. ;)

Nice choice for a vacation spot! I was there years ago and saw HIBri's place, but was between pool addictions and didn't venture inside. Did you make any$?!

I won a little the first night playing two different people but lost it back the next time I went there playing a ring game. They play by different rules which make the ring games an even bigger crap-shoot than they already are. It was fun though. I had to quit the ring game while I was stuck because we were catching a flight to Kauai the next morning and it was already around 2:00 AM. There was a pool room on Kauai but I didn't bother going in.

I visited Brians in May

I was there in May. I hit balls for an hour. The tables did have some big pockets. I watched the guys in the back of the room and seemed for mid day there was some serious gambling going on. My wife was with me so it was a quik visit. I just had to go see it. The man in the pro shop was awsome he hooked us up with some chalk holders for coming in and saying hi. He said he wish he had something more he could give us, but thats all he had. Ill never use em but they make a nice addition to my collection of pool trinkets.

If your ever get the chance stop in and see the place its cool,

I heard they have this special game which was played on a special board or something which they place over the table, does anyone know anything about that?
Thank you.

Its about time you got out there. Did you catch the daytime ring game?
Aren't you on the wrong island for you and the wife??

I went there at night, but there was already a 3 or 4 handed ring game going when I got there so I got in. It was 5 handed for quite a while. We were only on Oahu for 4 nights. We were on Kauai for 5 days after that. But, yeah, we do like Maui the best. Now if only Hawaiian Brian's were on Maui ... then it would truly be a perfect place. ;)

Sounds like you're talking about keno. They play that in other places also, including here in Arizona (although I haven't seen a keno board around in a while). It's a board with a bunch of holes in it and a ramp so a ball can roll up onto the board and into one of the holes. We played where you stand at the end that had the board on it, then you roll the ball down to the end rail so it hits the rail, bounces back and rolls up onto the board and finally rests in one of the holes. The holes are numbered, etc., etc..

Yes, Jimmy. Keno was what I was talking about. I thought it was just a game they played in Hawaii. Thank you for clarifying that out for me.

Did you run into Roland Ramos? He came to Phoenix several years ago and spent some time with me --- cues and all --- he had quite a collection (passion) of cues --- he told me he spent quite a bit of time at HB's and played with Brian. Haven't heard from him in a year or so -- wondered if you had run into him.

Hey Jack. No, I didn't meet him. I think that most of the regulars are there in the day time and I only made it there at night.
