I have noticed you guys talking much about opponents distracting you and playing in difficult environments such as bars and noisy pool rooms.I have the same problem here , in my pool club, if i can call it that (it would be an adventure for you to see how our tables look like :)) ) the music it's at the highest level possible. What do you guys think about a mp3 player os cd player with small ear phones, do you think that would be uncomfortable while you play.

I want mine to double as a two way radio so my coach can tell me what shot to take next!

Seriously though, I saw them wearing head phones in the World Series of Poker. So I would think it could help.

Pictoras,

Wearing headphones with music you like would be a personal thing which may help you a great deal in blocking out distractions (as long as what you are listening to is not a distraction). However, since you stated that the room you play in has music already at a loud volume, it may just be a disaster waiting to happen for your ears. Constant sound above the 80db sound level can have a permanent effect on your hearing. Listening to block out an already loud sound would mean that your headphones must be louder than the room and this is where trouble may lurk.

Listening to headphones with a relatively quiet room would block out side comments (if that bothers you) and potentially allow you to stay with a groove. However, it may also distract you. Give it a try to see whether or not it will help you. Hopefully, in a less than extremely noisy room though.

I hope this helps. Jerry

p.s. I tried using headphones a couple of times and have had mixed results regarding focus. In my case, I have decided to leave them off.

There was someone in a league that I once played in that used headphones. It didn`t seem to help him one bit.

I play better in a loud room. The louder the better. The worst thing that can happen to be in the middle of a runout, is for the music to stop.

instead of drowning out loud music with louder music being blasted directly in your ears why not consider ear plugs? it probably won't kill the sounds completely but it'll lower it probabl to regular talking levels if not lower

Another danger of headphones is not hearing players at the next table. At the local scruffy pool hall, you would be taking your life in your hands if you ran into another player, and ruined his shot while you were wearing headphones.

Last year in our straight pool league, the #1 and #2 players were tied at 91-91 (game to 100). The #1 player had an open table (14 balls left) and while he got down to shoot an easy 1 foot shot, a player wearing headphones at the next table bumped him causing him to foul. Player #2 easily ran out the game. No mayhem, but the #1 player was not extremely happy.

BJ Ussery will occasionally play with headphones. He's also known for winning a tourney here and there ;) .
