Heat treating steel

Hello Cuemakers
I got a new knife the other day (Jerry Fisk Sendero) and it got me to thinking.
Does anyone heat treat any of the steel used in cues, or use anything other that the standard 440 stainless?
I’ve seen a couple Schicks with Damascus and seen mention of Black Boar using hardened pins.

I’m pretty sure it will make some difference in the way a cue reacts to it, how much I have no idea.

Anyway, I was just thinking about it and thought I would pose the question here and see what happens.
Thanks for the time and reasonable responses

No. A 5/16 or 3/8 diameter pin, hardened, is not going to play differently. I've tried several types of steel treating for cosmetics before, but it does not change any part of the hit.

There are so many options out there for cosmetic adjustments, people are barely scratching the surface. I love the Damascus joints, but they aren't fashionable

I doubt it .
SS steel is stiff enough .

Just as a “for instance”, if a maker uses a steel pin in the A-joint. Do you think there would be a difference between a brass one and a SS one? I’m not saying you are wrong and I respect the work you do.
But, if choosing different woods for the butt affect the cue, I’m assuming different types of steel would be the same.
Or it could be that anything harder that the woods used produce the same effects.

Is there a difference in hit with a brass pin vs a ss?
I agree that Damascus would be nice to see used more, very cool look and the patterns are limitless.

Brass vs SS? Maybe. Doubt if you can tell the difference. They weigh close to the same .
It wouldn't make an iota of difference if the SS in the middle is 60 HRC instead of 45-50 HRC.

Different woods are different animal. The difference between soft woods and hard woods can be enormous.
Mild steel vs hardened steel in a purpose where hardness does not really matter ? No difference.

It has been proven time and again that cues with different joint configurations, pins, whatever, are unable to be discerned by the vast majority of players.

Point taken, I’ll file this one away under “Jon’s dumbass ideas”.
Thanks for the input, it is truly appreciated!

Don't think its necessary....I didn't do it on this Damascus collar, not saying you couldn't but not sure of the benefit.

I like the damascas collar.

Could one be fabricated from dimensions, duplicated from an existing ss collar or would the entire butt and shaft need to be in hand of the machinist?

I would imagine each would be different, this was etched at final size and then finished.

Most of the stainless steel cue hardware I see is 303 stainless not 440, inclluding uni-loc parts. I don't know if that helps you any.
