I've been thinking about this for awhile.

What would happen if everyone out there tried to help someone improve their game. You will not only make a friend but that person in turn just might share what he learned with someone else and pass his new knowledge on.

What a great concept to build this pool world of ours to a level never seen before. We have this power to do this. There has to be a million players already in the world.

You don't need to be an instructor and charge money to help a fellow player.

In the next month or so share your story here with helping someone improve their game.

It might even be someone you don't know very well.

Telling your rewarding story here might even encourage more players to follow your lead.

Like the Phrase, How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time.

How do we build our pool world to new height.

One Players at a time..

Good luck and thanks for reading.............

i like this

I dont post on here often more of a reader.
I have been playing pool like most people on this site since i had to push a beer box around the table i grew up with a 10' snooker table i am not the best shot on in the world but far from the worst. I play some in house bca leagues a 14:1 league and about 2 years ago a friend got me to join his apa team. This isn't about the apa so i agree the apa blows but let's leave that alone for now. So i start on this 8 ball team and everyone is terrible and should quit as far as i was concerned but i sat there for a few weeks suffering through till i would get to go.smash some one and out of nowhere one of our sl2s comes and asks how do you do that so easily? And i tried to tell her how i see the game and how i play my shots and others on the team come over and started listening. Now what i was saying only confused them more but they all wanted to learn and improve their own games so i thought i would at least attempt to help them, this proved to be difficult as none of them could grasp what i was saying. So one night i was at home practicing and i started evaluating every bit of my game stance stroke position play English everything and realized i had to start from where i started with them (this also helped me improve my game along the way) needless to say that original 2 is now a 6 and we have had to split that team 4 times in 4 sessions due to handicaps i enjoy teaching my players how to improve and they enjoy it more and bring more friends out to play only Making the pool scene better in my area. the more 20 something's with yoga pants the better lmao

keep up the good rewarding work. We're going to need some of the past stories of helping players before the new ones start rolling in. Hopefully there will be a bunch.

When you help someone with pool it's a very special bond that is created.

Thanks again...........

This is one of most positive and pure posts I have seen here. Gene is one of the gentleman of our sport, great player, instructor and probably not a bad guy while asleep. lol:)

Your right but it is not that easy sometimes. One thing you can do is be willing to play with weaker players without trying to prey on them.

I will give you an example. I owned a couple of pool rooms. I love to practice, I can hit balls for hours by myself. I would often be playing by myself and someone would be watching and I would say, "Grab a cue lets hits some". They would look around like are you talking to me. Of course they will not have any table time playing with me. But these were often players who would never dream of asking me to play. It is amazing how much they can pick up just playing with you if you give them a chance.

You may throw out some advice here and there but don't spoil the game by constantly them what to do. If they have a brain they begin to get it after a while. They also begin to feel less like outsiders in the pool room if they get to know the better players who they tend to look up to. It is an easy start to passing on some of what you know without sounding like a know it all.

One of the neatest things that I have had happen to me is when I helped a family with an older girl (15 maybe) understand how to line up properly on a shot. They were playing and seemed to be something they did before, but they kept aiming in seemingly random places. I showed them how to line up the cue and arm on a straight line and how to line up on the line of aim instead of just wave the stick around in one direction while looking in another. Afterwards they stopped by to thank me to say that it was the first time someone explained this to them in a way they understood.

From traveling and teaching I meet so many players that have never had a lesson or anyone that at all ever show them anything.

I'll bet they had so much more fun and started making more balls. This is what we need. Players to learn to play better.

Each and every league has some players that are better than most.

We have the force out there to really make a difference.

The only reason I charge for lessons at all is so I can keep going. For every lesson I do out there I do 2 for free.

I'm trying to do my part. for about 5 years now but there can be so much more going on out there. We all hold the secret to making this pool game we love bigger and better than before. The numbers will get bigger and better than ever before.

We keep working it this way by paying forward and someday there will be too many players at some of the tournys.

Wouldn't that be great.

It's stories like this that will help players step up and try to help some of their local players. They can pass it on and then the players they help can pass it on.

We can be the sport that trys to help everyone.

What a good habit that would be.

I don't think I've ever heard anyone say, Oh that darn Larry or Bob, They're always trying to help someone.

It's a great gift you can give another person is to help them have a little extra fun.

With more stories like this there will be new ones to come.

Thanks.........for sharing.............

I've been playing for 52 years and at one time was pretty good short stop speed.
I have tried to help people but for the most part they have seemed to not care. I have been looking for that one player that i can teach 52 years of knowledge to but have not found one yet. So i suspect I will take it to the grave. What a shame.

we had free tournaments for teenagers on holiday time on local pool hall.
winners got free table time and t-shirts etc.
we also asked promising/excited players if they wanted to learn game more.
owner made a deal for them practice cheap small monthly fee. i did teach them 1-3 times a week, some of them stayed with game past years and boom! after 5-6 years we had many junior champs in finland and european medalist players on junior series.

also pool got quite famous and popular in that small city and that made that pool hall most "in" bar/cafe of city and made good money.
other cities wondered how we got so many talented players every year... but only it needed was little free work and care to game.

How are things in Denver...............

I understand the problems sometimes with players that don't want to hear any advice even if it's gold.

The problem many times is the players don't even know what they don't know. many players just think they need to play more if they want to play better and to a certain extent that is right but it will take forever to improve.

many of the top players have went through this hard knocks of learning. But it doesn't have to be that way.

Once you crack open that , I can do it on my own attitude, and the players mind is opened up the sky can be the limit.

But for instance, a 2 or 3 in APA will listen to just about anything, and just about anything will help, especially when it comes from a player of your caliber. Most of them are starved for advice. They are very receptive. They want to play better if they can. they just might not think that they can.

Just think if all the 2s and 3s and 4s in the APA leagues had a little good advice. Pretty soon they have to split their team because their team average is too high. The league gets bigger and we have more pool players.

but the secret is we have pool players that are playing better and not just pushing balls around. Soon the game starts to make more sense and their having more fun.

All of a sudden we have a tournament and it's plum full. In fact it's too full.

And we can all make this happen.

And what a better place for this to happen then on the biggest pool website in the world.

The timing is right.

it's you and you and you and you that can make this happen. A coordinated effort by players everywhere whenever they can make a difference.

Don't give up there Measureman. I'm sure there are players out there that at the right time would be delighted to learn a nugget or 2 from you.

I'd love to hear your story when you find that person.

Just when you think it won't happen. POW..........

you made a huge difference in a players life................

Im currently a college student and have helped quite a few people in school with their games. I am at best a B player but still was able to teach people what the correct way to play the game is. I have witnessed a couple break and runs by students who were D players when i met them. I do this without asking for anything in return and just purely for the love of the game.

What inspired me was when I was just a banger in a pool room in Taiwan ive had A players come to me and offered to play for table time. It started that way and he saw that I was interested in learning and split table time with me in the futurewhile giving me lessons. I am sure if there are more people like this we will see a lot more young players who play a respectable game.

Bingo ! You are right.
Sometimes when I show someone something they will say "I had no idea you could do that"
For instance using an inside english extreme skid shot to kill the cue ball to a rail.

I try to promote the game that I love. I look at the pool playing community as a family. Disfunctional family but family all the same. This year me and a few friends are running a weekly Friday tour, a benefit tourney planned for a great guy and player for his wife that has stage 4 cancer and a bounty tourney. These are just in the next 2 months. I also try to help the up and coming players with the game that I understand the best. The mental game. Their outlook on pool, and also on life. I made so many mistakes in my life and try to help them not make the same mistakes.

I do my best to promote pool in an area where we have strong competition. I am not perfect in what I do but it is a labor of love. I make a decision and then stick to it. Geno knows me and can attest that I am stubborn. Hopefully he can also agree that the tourneys that he played in that I ran back home were ran good. The venue I have most of my tourneys out of is a local hot spot that gets way to busy later in the evening and the smoking area goes by the tables that are used. Crowd control is a problem but we do our best. I have come to the conclusion that running tourneys is a thankless job. It is worth it in the end just for the sake of the family getting together.

Every year my GF puts together a Jr league.

Some of the kids have become serious players others do it for the fun. It does take the patients of a saint. S5002107.jpgReal proud of her work.

it's not how we start but how we finish...........

We all start at the beginning.

Sometimes the beginning is a little rough.

Some people never figure it out.

You're hitting home runs every week my friend.

fortunately for everyone your finish is a long way off yet.

Keep up the good work
