a broad generality

There is little chance that you will accurately id this material without disturbing its finished form.
I can tell you that it resembles at least a half dozen unidentified hardwoods I have recovered from disassembled pallets from S. America and China. I have several in testing currently. So, a good guess would be little more that just that.
An experienced forester can identify to genus fairly easily with reliable origin information, but he would have to 'uncover' the wood both with and cross grain...maybe even some destructive testing.
Hope this helps...

Daniel....seems like I have seen this wood before, and for the life of me cannot remember what it is. :banghead:

I would suggest posting this over in the "Ask the Cue Makers" forum, as you may get a better response from those who see wood all day long. :D

Is that a Varney? If I were guessing something in the rosewood family.

It looks like a very grainy, porous wood. Almost like an ash or alves, but not quite... I'd finger rosewoods as having smoother grain, a more defined ring pattern.

Appears to be Phillipine mahogany or a mahogany of some sort. It is very commonly seen in many house cues.

I believe the wood is called Makore, theres is figured, and unfigured, this is unfigured, I built a cue out of it recently, and still have some,

Or it also looks like unfigured bubinga also.

Just talked to Bob Runde & its sapele.

DOH! No wonder it looked familiar to me....I am such a dope...I had a Taylor acoustic guitar that had the same wood for the back and sides.
