I need some help with history info on this cue. I know this much; it is an older WICO plastic veneer 3 point Viking Window cue. Beyond that I'm clueless, no pun intended. Any info from all you wizards regarding when it was built, how rare it is with WICO points, etc. would be FANTASTIC!!
Thanks,
John

John,

I have a Viking VIP from the 1966 time period. Yours is a version of this design. Under the window, mine says "The Viking Cue Company" which is the 1960's version of the logo. Mine also does not have a rubber bumper. The buttcap on mine has a finished black end cap and no rubber. Yours also has a more contemporary joint than the very early Vikings.

I am pretty sure yours is the "Z-100" from 1978 judging by the butt design. It's on page 835 of the blue book. Viking bought blanks from a whole bunch of different makers, Wico, Spain, and I even have a Viking with a Palmer blank. I like Wico blanks a lot, they sure were innovative and had great looks. Unlike veneers, there is no seam in the plastic, and the colors are vibrant.

Palmer stopped using WICO blanks because they were concerned the plastic "veneers" would eventually separate. I don't think that turned out to be the case at all. I have only one cue with a WICO forearm and it's perfect.

Thanks Chris, I was under the impression the Z-100 built in 1978 was a 4 point forearm where this one is a 3 point. I'm sure you are right. Are the WICO points rare??

John,

You don't see too many of these. You might want to contact Viking about this too. I am not well briefed on Viking's history, just bits and pieces.

I overlooked that it was a 3 point blank. It might not be WICO but actually a Viking built blank. I believe that Viking built their own with plastic veneers too mostly with 3 points.

Well, it's a long story, but my understanding is that WICO was/is a billiards distributor establised in the 1940 in Chicago. They started a cue making operation. Bob Meucci worked there. Thery were among the first to make the milled points "short splice". Bob Meucci is often credited with creating this design with plastics.

WICO made these forearms and sold them to Doc Fry, palmer, Gus Szamboti, and others. When Meucci left WICO in the early 1970's, I think they gave up the cue operation, and Bob showed Gordon Hart how to make these forearms. Thsi time period makes sense because your cue has features of the Vikings built in the later 1970's.

My Palmer is made in the mid 1960's with 4 points with a very early WICO blank. The WICO blanks are not very common, especially 3 points.

Anyway, maybe Viking can shed some light on this. If you fnd out, can you let me know?

?????????

I Had a WICO 3 pt, super joint, rosewood, plain white butt cap an
I think it was ordered in 1973. I think they just pushed a lot of stuff with the vinyl veneers. I saw the cue about 1 yr. ago it looked good.
