A friend of mine recently opened a poolroom in the seattle area. He is a strong local player and used to gamble with other local players frequently. Now that he's a room owner he's worried that he can't win if he gambles. If he plays and wins he might lose a customer if he plays and loses he loses. Any of you face this problem? Did you continue gambling or quit? WHat brought you to that decision?
P.s. he isn't comfortable with computers thats why I'm posting for him

Thanx

my approach has always been: Don't Gamble. it just brings in the clientele that doesn't spend a dime outside their table time.

another rule that I adhere to is: it's okay to play in your tourneys; it's not okay to win your own tourneys. I've seen tourney entry numbers drop when the 'room owner' plays and wins. (caused the local poolroom to close; at least it was one of the major contributing factors)

JMHO after almost six decades on this planet.

Which room are you talking about, the one in Bothell? In the Seattle area, there's plenty of action to go around, and he don't have to worry about losing customers if he gambles with some of them, as most don't play for money anyway. I can name about 20 players that he wouldn't lose for anything...if he likes betting:D

Glen

PS. If he likes hustling his customers, that's a whole different thing, that's not good, BUT I guarantee you he won't scare off JD, Todd Marsh, Rich Geiler, Dan Louie, Mike Zimmerman, Tim Tweedell, Eddie, Harry Plattis...the list goes on and on!

Gambling with customers especially if you are a rated local player
usually is not good for your business. Unfortunately being in a strong shortstop
position your customers may feel you are taking advantage of them (because you own the place, practice at least 5 hours per day,are making all kinds of money, and still hustling them!!!!!!!!!!!!) What little they know about being in business.
Now meanwhile personally you are capable of beating any player in the area,
but cant run with the road/pro players that come into your room because you are running a business and cant spend enough time to be more competative with them.
So, choose very carefully what regular customers you play for anything,
Keep away from the road players ,they know what to do to bring down the cash better than you do and they are most likely better players than you are.

thnx for the help i'll be sure to pass along the information. The new room is called the golden fleece and is locted in kenmore Kobra
