Hey everyone. This is my first time on the forumns.
First off lemme give you a brief background. Ok so im 24, my parents are getting a pool table here in the up coming months and decided i want my own pool cue, that being said i have no experience with anything other then used and abused bar cues, im not teribble nor good at pool lol. That being said my main purpose is going to be playing casually. Ive looked a bit and dont really wanna spend over $100, i know this doesnt seem much to work with but i dont want to drop $300 on a cue that will get used maybe once a week.
Ive looked at a couple brands.
Player cues
Mcdermott lucky cues
Valhalla

From what ive heard mcdermott is pretty much a safe bet and i found a couple of the lucky cues in my price range. Heres one
http://www.mcdermottcue.com/l40.php

Any advice is appreciated, ive looked about some used custom cues but hard to tell if tgey arent damaged or not a problem.

I know the quality of mass produced cues isnt up there with the customs but i think one in this range will suit me fine for casual play. Also i have not played with anything other than bartered house cues and im sure any of the cues in my range will be suitable

Get the McDermott. I started with one of those and then moved up to OB. I'm getting my first custom made cue from Eddie Cohen, delivery later this year. Planning to keep them all. The girlfriend uses the McDermott now and she's eyeing the OB. She plays better with the OB, so upgrading is natural to step your game up IMHO. Once you start, the cue art bug bites.

Daryle is right.......go with a McD.........and Daryle, look forward to seeing photos of your cue in the Gallery..... Eddie has been knocking out great designs the last couple of years.

So the lucky cue series designed and engineered br mcdermott should be fine for a starter?
I know there is a big difference between theyre designed series and theyre own manufactured cues

Most important is to find the cue weight which you like/feels right for you. I like a lite 18 oz cue while alot like 19 to 19.5. Each to there own!

Good thing with the McDermott cue is the ability to adjust the weight, with bolts to suit your style of play.

Thanks for the info guys, think im gonna go with the mcdermott lucky series L40 thats in the link. Think im going to stick with the standard 19-19.5 oz for now

Plus tgey have a 3 year warranty excluding warpage though

I'm using the HXT-P1 Jump Break and I like the look and feel. Good cue for the money. Although I still think McDermott make a better everyday player cue.

I tried out a Players cue that cost about $100 and liked it a lot better than the Lucky cues.
The Players cue was more solid and hit really good.

Find a place you can hit with the cues first before you buy, then make your decision. I have heard of the lucky cues having a warpage problem from a local poolroom, and difficulty returning brand new cues due to this. Otherwise, McDermott has been around a long time with a good reputation. Same for Viking and Player.
There has been some mention of Schmelke as a good starter cue at a good price point on the forum. Good reputation from a company that has been around a long time as well, and also stands behind their product.
Ultimately, if you can,try before you buy, and there is a lot to be said for a lifetime warranty.

I have been selling cues for years. I think the players cues give you a lot of cue for the price. the lucky cues are poorly made with a lot of wrap problems but i do like the McDermott brand cues. another cue you might want to look at are the dufferin two piece cues. the old ones from the 80s & 90s were terrible but the new ones are very nice for the price. good luck with whatever you decide and i would certainly recommend you hit with a few cues and buy the one that you like best regardless of the brand.

The McDermott Lucky series is a good cue for the money. If you were willing to bump your dollar amount to a little over $100 then Schmelke would be a good USA made alternative to the imported McDermott Lucky series. If you could go a little higher you could get into a lower end USA McDermott. Or you could go used and get a USA made cue for under $200.

$100 limits your choices quite a bit...I think you need to look at $300-ish to get long lasting quality...just my opinion, but if you find you like the game, you'll be dropping that much or more in the very near future, and your initial $100 is basically down the drain. In for a penny in for a pound, I say! Then I'd look seriously at a Cuetec R360 or a McDermott (non-import) or even a basic Joss. They all hit about as good as any cue you'll find and will last longer than you will. If you get sick of the game, you can at least get some of your money back selling it...no one will buy a used Lucky Cue.

Thanks a lot guys i really appreciate all the input, im like a kid on the block, want the best of the best lol i can easily afford a more expensive cue but just not sure i wanna go that high. Ive been looking and i really like the mcdermott g core g318
http://www.mcdermottcue.com/g318.php

Is this a better option, i do like the made in usa part plus the lifetime warranty, would something like this pretty much cover me for a long time, i hate spending a lot but either spend 100 now and 300 later or 300 now.
Also the retail on that cue is 399. I found some on ebay from dealers for 339
