Help Tapping New Shaft for 3/8-10 Pin

Hi Richard
Yes, there are different size taps, I have 4 taps just for 3/8X10. I had mine made by North American tap and die but I believe Atlas sell different size taps. The regular thread 3/8X10 for example, you can use a smaller drill than 5/16 because the pitch of the screw depending on who made it can go as low as .281 The screws that Schmelke sells, the pitch is not as deep, so I am guessing that they adjusted for the slop of the standard tap. The flat bottom I have not worked with but I believe you need at least a .304 or .306 hole so the 5/16 hole should be okay. I hope some of this helps you.

Thanks Michael, nothing ever seems to be easy these days. I was planning on using their pins so Ill just call them tomorrow to see what works best with each style of pin they sell. Im going to take a wild guess that Ill be buying another tap from them! LOL

I have more tap an dies than you can shake a stick at. Most of them custom from Widell and North American. What Atlas charges is pennies compared to having them made custom.

Obviously, you've never seen me shake a stick. :grin-square:

haha,
Basically I got tired of the sloppy fit and I don't believe in the bullshit of using super glue on the threads to make up for it, so I measured the screws I buy and had the proper taps made for wood and phenolic. Grinding the threads is a great option but back in the day when I worked tourneys, and made shafts on the spot, Taps, if you know how to drill, bore and tap properly, you don't ever have to grind. I'm sure you'll agree, you also have the skills to tap. I've worked on your cues shafts for your customers up here. They're tapped straight.

Flat bottom thread minor diameter on the pin is .308. Bore to .312 for installing the pin for glue relief. For the standard thread, the spec's allow .265-.288 for internal minor diameter. Most likely you will go toward the larger as wood does not tap the same as steel. Practice on test dowels, you may still have to go larger. Minor dia. for the pin for standard 3/8-10 should be .265 max. but as someone already said this might change depending on who makes it. This is all ass-uming H2 class fit (machinist's handbook).
