There is a local 9-ball tournament that uses a handicapping system. The current system rates players from 4 to 13. Matches are played to each players rating, unless they are both above 7 and then the lower ranked player plays to 7 and the higher ranked player plays to 7 plus the difference in their ranking (if a 13 played a 10 it would be a 10 - 7 race).
Currently, the system is based on the tournament operator establishing each player's handicap based on his knowledge of the players. He consults the other players and monitors match scores, but would like to make it less subjective (so the whiners won't have a reason to cry to him about the handicaps).
Player discussion talked about taking each match score into account and adjusting rankings based on match results. There was also discussion about factoring in when player cashes in a tournament.
Do you know of any handicap systems that take into account a players match results? Do you have any suggestions about how tournament results can be incorporated into a handicap, similar to how golf calculates a handicap based on round scores?
Any and all thoughts and suggestions would be helpful. Thanks.
