Help with finish on shaft!

Hello all,

My buddy Garret just got his new cue today.

However his new Ultimate Weapon Shaft was covered with gunk when his kids were playing with it. He took a diaper wipe and now it took off all the wax... and it kinda feels like crap now

He is kinda busy so I'm asking on his behalf!

What can he actually do to make it feel better again?

Thanks!

Take it to a repair guy and have him fix it. Then only wipe it down with a damp cloth with warm water and a dry cloth immediately afterwards when it gets dirty.

OR....he could spend 20 or thirty bucks on materials(shellac or other sealer, wax, sand paper) and, without a lathe, ruin it completely for more money that having someone do it properly....

I imagine a light sand with 600, a couple seal coats, sand to 1200, then some nice wax will make it better than new...

I digress. He might be able to get it nice with one of those burnishing clothes....I forget the name of the things....

Is this shaft made of wood? My Magic Eraser is a friend of mine...then some 400, then 600 grit works for me. Then use a clean white towel from a motel room and rub it hard and fast until it warms up.

For a sealer I use Q-juice and for wax I use Butcher's amber paste wax.

Not everyone likes the wax though....

Don't really have to spend too much money.

You mean Nick's Edge, Q Wiz and/or Q Smooth? Yea, if you want to DIY use one of those and finish with wax and buff. Otherwise, it sounds like you just need a cleaning - the diaper wipe was too wet which raised the grain on the shaft and clearly, he wiped the entire shaft. Take it to a cuemaker or good repairman for a cleaning: incremental grits to 600 or higher, seal, wax and buff.

Well he forgot to leave out one major detail. Yes he did use the baby wipe or what ever but he also used a piece of black leather to try and burnish the shaft:eek:. Well needless to say when I got the shaft yesterday It looked like the dye had transfered on to the shaft staining it black. I did my best and cleaned it like I normaly would if I was just doing a shaft recondition. I got out quite a bit but not all of it. He asked about sanding it down and I told him you just may want to see if you can live with it like it is now. Reason Being is that it was plenty deep in the pores and to get it out it looked like you would need to take off .10mm or more. If anyone has any other ideas Im all ears.

I'm not confirming for sure, but I think possibly goof off with magic eraser might work out for you.

Ajax with bleach and a damp rag will probably get it out. Yeah I know, I felt the same way almost 20 years ago. No problems so far.

Fresh Magic Eraser + denatured alcohol + 60 minutes worth of dedicated elbow grease = black is GONE .

Makes no difference whether the OP has a lathe or not, this is done with the lathe OFF,scrub with the grain, and keep the sponge damp with denatured alcohol.

Then sand, seal and wax. Tommy D.
