A friend of mine recently cleaned the joint pin and the shaft cavity with some alcohol and cue tip as suggested by a well known cue maker. Since then the fit has been so tight that its hard to take the cue apart. Is there anyway to loosen the fit alittle??. The joint is a wood to wood joint. Any suggestions would be great.

Try a bit of soap on the pin and then carefully work it into the shaft.

I believe if you get together with a friend and work on it, you can fix it. Have your friend hold on to the shaft, near the joint, you take the butt end. Pull on it as you unscrew it. Do it a few times. This is how Blud fixed a joint protector that I needed vice grips to get off. Ivory to wood joint.

Be careful!!!!!

Without over doing it, would you damage anything by giving a light quick squirt of WD-40 or Liquid Wrench to the pin?

I would definitely NOT use wd-40, don't know about liquid wrench. WD-40, after it dries, tend to collect alot of dirt, grime, or whtever else it can. As a locksmith, I see many lock failures due to people using this stuff.......I hate it.
Take it for what it's worth.

That's good to know....message taken!

A little wax on the pin and it'll work like a charm! The alchohol raised the grain of the wood. The wax should smooth it down again.

Wax just might actually make the joint TIGHTER !!!

Rub a bar of Ivory down three sides of the pin, and slowly screw on the shaft.

They also sell this product called "wood lube," for sticky drawers and cabinets. A little bit of that on the pin also works, but I'm sure soap will do the trick just as nicely.

Would cooking oil work??

eventually, the oil will dry, and become a layer of varnish.

paraphin wax(regular candle wax) will work fine. get the cheap birthday candle stuff and rub it against the inside of the threaded shaft.

Maybe not screwing it together so tight? With my cues, when my hubbie screwed them, I could not get them apart, but when I screwed the butt and shaft together, had no problem getting them apart, just screwed it tight enough so it would fit properly.

It gets tight when the pin is 3/4 way in... Wouldnt want to play with it wit an exposed pin like that....

erik....you never should have subjected the threads to alcohol....what has happened is that the threads have swollen and it might take forever for them to dry out.....you may need to send the cue back to the maker so they can chase the thread with there tap to clean up this problem.......never and i say never subject wood threads to anything that will make them swell,no matter what you are told........juston coleman

There is a product called Never-Seez that pipefitters use on studs to allow easy removal of nuts. Hardware stores or plumbing supply stores will carry it. The stuff is a graphite compound, slick and is very messy. I have used a very small amount on the pin and put the cue together and took it back apart several times and then wiped the pin off. It leaves a light film and will not dry, although it will collect dust. Make sure you use a joint protector. When the joint becomes tight again just re-apply. It will make a world of difference. A small can will last forever.
