Hood Cue Repairs
brass ferrules looking at some repairs for friends snooker cues anyone know where to purchase these replacment ferrules all i could find on the web is in the uk

I do a lot of snooker repairs and assuming you have a lathe, you can go to a metal shop/hardware store and buy some 1/2 " brass rod and make as many as you like. Each one would have to be custom anyways

You can buy brass rod at the hardware store and make your own easy enough. Watch your fingers as those really fine brass splinters love to dig into them. In other words vacuum the lathe off right after you drill and turn this stuff.

I have turned them out of several different kinds of brass plumbing parts. My father was a plumber for the last half of his life, so I've always had bags and boxes of scrap brass to pull from. It's only every once in a while that I have to install one on a snooker shaft, but It's worked for me when I needed to make a ferrule for one in a pinch. Like others have mentioned, a hardware store would be a good place to look. You can probably buy brass rod on that auction bay place too.;)

Most of the ones I have seen are 9.5mm diameter and the ferrule is just a piece of tube.
K&S engineering make a 3/8 hard drawn tube available from most model/hobby supply stores. The tube is available in 1/32 inch increments. It is rear to see a brass ferrule that has a solid end cap of brass, but they are out there.

Your right about that most are thin, but I have ran into those with the thick sidewalls and/or capped too. Heavy little boogers... talk about extra tip weight. Due to the taper It Might not have as much of a negative effect though. Not sure, as I only work on them occasionally, and don't have any snooker cues that I shoot with, but It would seem that the stiff taper could help..

Do your friend a favour and replace it with phenolic. Lighter, just as strong and won't throw the cueball as much.
I build snooker cues and they all have phenolic ferrules.

If you do turn your own from brass rod do some research into proper tool cutting angles. That stuff can dig in surprisingly fast when cutting with more common tool geometry. :shocked2:
