That screams 'Metric' thread to me. 5/16" is, as near as makes no difference, 8mm. 8mm screws are commonly (unless they are fine thread) 1.25mm pitch. 1.25mm pitch is roughly 20tpi. Being as the phillipines are part of the rest of the world and the rest of the world uses metric fasteners, I would lay odds on this being the case.

Checking this against a metric thread gauge, as I have suggested, would solve this mystery.

It might be. I never checked with a thread gauge. I'll give it a try some time. You very well may be right.

What I did was to put it up against a known 18 pin and the threads "mesh". It did seem that the major diameter and minor diameter were very slightly different but the thread pitch the same.

Interesting.

A thread gauge will show if the threads aren't cut at standard angles, won't really tell much about minor diameter. Major diameter of 5/16 and 8mm can easily be identical and in tolerance for each other--the 8mm nominal is ~0.0025" greater than 5/16".

It requires some trial, and special tools, but it is the correct way to measure threads.

I am not sure but it seemed like the minor diameter was the issue. It's been at least three years since I actually looked at this.

After seeing this thread I am going to look at it again so satisfy my curiosity. It never actually came to my mind before that they might be metric! So if I wasn't looking for it, it might have gone right over my head.

I have thread gauges, I have a fairly complete set of tools....two full rollaways in fact. They're just burried in my garage since we moved here. I can't even get to them. I would love to remedy that but every time I look at the taks I find an excuse to do something else! LOL!

Thanks for your thoughts on it. Non-standard pins are an aggravation and unecessary IMHO. As has been said before by the cue makers in these forums "oh no, another bastard pin".
