I have commissioned a ton of cues, but I have never just said, here is some money, build me a cue, ship to me when you are done.

Have you ever had this experience? Would you like it or would you request input?

Any thoughts?

Ken

I have considered doing this. With no knowledge of what it would be, seems like a fun idea. The only input I'd give if I did it is the shaft thickness, tip diameter, taper, and length and leave the rest up to them and just say "Build me something nice."

I had something very similar happen once. I even got a $500 tip when it was done. I kept him filled in on what we had in mind. He just said a couple of materials he wanted in the cue and left the design up to us.

Yes, it has happened to me several times. All were very favorable experiences.

Reminds me of a long meeting I have with Dieckman on his Michigan "Porch" Among other things I told him I thought it'd be cool to make a 100% maple cue but with more than one type of maple. No veneers. From a distance it would look like just a piece of blond wood.
About 2 years later he sends me 2 from which to pick from. After about 30 days I sent them back to finish up the one I chose. Several months later he sends me the cue but it was the other one. LOL I tell him and he says FU you're gonna have the one I sent you. Of course I send him a check.

About a year later, and to rub salt in the wound, he gives my son the cue I wanted but with no shafts. Signed to him BFUQ4Stephen Dieckman ∞ I gotta supply the shafts from my stock.
The only real difference in the 2 was the pieces of wood. I liked the looks of one over the other.
We all had a big laugh over the whole thing. I'd bring it up every so often when he'd climb up on his high horse.
Miss the ol bastard.

Great story....Dieckman seems like a character and would have enjoyed working with him. Sorry to see him pass.

I have had 2 people offer up cash(2000, another guy said tell what I need to send you for something really nice) The 2 grand guy was happy as hell. The "tell me what to send" guy has a cue in the works, ebony and amboyna burl with ivory inlays. Most of my customers have a general idea, especially about ferrule diameter and weight and ask for wood combo suggestions.

Yes Dennis was something else. I really liked him. After he went in our International Cuemakers Hall of Fame I ordered a cue from him from a blank he had and put like a quarter of the cost down. At the next expo he brought it too me and the butt was gorgeous and finished. Then he handed me the two shafts that did not have tips and ferrules. He told me he had done all he was going to do to it and that I did not owe him anything more. He was one of a kind indeed.
