Here Is The Draw For The World Pool Championship

I like the format. You must win two matches to get thru the preliminary Group Stage. Then it is single elimination for the final 64 players. I also like the return to Winner Breaks on the tough Metro tables. It is exciting to see a player string racks, whether he is ahead or behind. And it won't be easy on these tables.

The final race to seventeen is a marathon, especially after going to eleven the last three rounds. This match is potentially half again as long as the previous matches (33 max games opposed to 21). I would think a race to fifteen would be more than long enough. One day I think we will see two out of three set matches in single elimination tourneys. Maybe all races to seven. More like a tennis match this way.

Most importantly, they have solved a big problem in the group stages. All races to nine and double elimination works well here. Everyone gets a fair chance to advance. And all matches are equally important.

groups 9,12 & 13 seem to be the toughest.

I suspect that this year, unlike recent years, there will be many more lopsided scores. It will be very hard for the weaker players to keep up with the elite ones now that winner breaks. I much prefer this, as it allows the better player (better during this match), to avoid what I have always felt was a handicapp in favor of the weaker competitors.

Jay,
Tepwin is the only Thai player on the roster that I see. He lost to Efren last year in a very one sided match if I remember right. You could see the fear in his eyes during the match. I believe Efren is his idol.

I have known him for about 5 years and he is a super nice guy. Like the other Thai team players, he is a snooker player, and only started learning pool a few years ago. He owns a small snooker parlor on the outskirts of Bangkok, and he has one Gold Crown in the place.

I'll get some more info on him in case you have to commentate one of his matches. Millions of Thais watch the WPC live, and last year the two Thai players were virtual unknowns to the commentators. I'd love to see that change this year.
