Hey Dr. Dave, are there any diagrams of the effect of English off the CB

I know the effects are slight, but I feel like there's a difference between straight draw in a 15 degree cut and say, bottom right, even accounting for the deflection.

I also think there was a video of Appleton teaching a girl how to get different results on straight follow shots.

The amount of bottom spin, the amount of sidespin, and shot speed all affect the amount of OB throw and therefore the cut direction. For more info, see the videos and info here:

And for resources supporting each effect, see the links under throw here:

squirt/swerve/throw effects summary

Enjoy,

If you want to see graphs/plots showing in detail how throw varies with everything, check out the illustrations here:

TP A.28 – Throw plots for all types of shots

TP B.3 – Throw calibration and contour plots for various cut angles, speeds, English, and roll

Enjoy,

I didn't see the video; but if the shot is very straight, there are several options to avoid the scratch: slight pocket cheat, create an angle using spin-induced throw (where the throw can cancel some or all of the CB deflection), or use more speed with a slight angle to swing the CB out more.
More info and videos concerning the bolded approach above can be found in the answer to the last question here:
