Came up last night. I broke, hill-hill and had this layout. I am telling you, this table break tougher than any I've ever played on. Seems like 30%+ of the racks are "UN-runnable".

I am no world beater, and this is as TOUGH an out as I have ever faced (and survived).

Before somebody posts, The 7 does not go cleanly to the 9, neither does the 8.

Ball in hand. Win from here or die.

What do you do?

Post your solutions, then I'll give up mine. I hope it's not obvious. I felt pretty sporty with what I came up with.

I play the 1-7 combo, play to get the 1 near the side rail, then draw off of it into the 9 to win.

Playing shape on the 1-9 would require an angle on the combo and I might miss, the carom is just as easy and would cinch my first shot.

sorry to sidetrack this thread, but i'd like to know what this "vs. the ghost" concept is??? i know the term "ghost ball" as part of an aiming system but what do you mean when you say you're playing against the ghost? thanks.

I viewed this thread befored you edited it and the layout was different...

Sorry, still learning to use the tool, this is my first thread using it.

The frozen cluster 2-5 and the fact that the 7 & 8 prevent even a three ball combo are the important parts.

I think I just gave away the ending.

Break the rack, and take ball in hand. Try to get out. Miss and you lose.

No safeties, no push out, just run out or lose.

Playing the ghost means you break the rack and then you take cue ball in hand.If you miss a shot you loose the game.So basically I can put the cue ball anywhere I want after the break but If I don`t run all the balls or make a 9 ball combo I loose.

There's no direct route from the 1 to the 9, either combo or carom.

Shooting the 7 towards the 9 hits the 8.

You can't shoot the 1 into the 8 full enough to get it towards the 9

no other solutions?

Thoughts?

i was gonna say bank the 1 long rail into the 9 before i saw what you did. i would just have to go for it and if i missed, racke 'em up and start a new set. no other choice with that layout.

I was PISSED. I had scratched, and clawed my way to hill-hill, and I broke and saw THAT!!!

I looked at combos, caroms, break outs for the 2, begging for shape on that damned 3.

I was finally standing at the rack end of the table, and the 9 looked like a bit of a hanger. I thought, you know, playing one pocket, I would EXPECT to make that 9. Hell, bank it soft, into the rail, and go down gamblin'.

It went and I was giggling like a 5yo kid.

I just wondered if it was obvious. It really took me a minute.

i understood his solution as playing the 1-7 to get position for a 1-9 combo on the next shot, which i'd say is pretty smart

Actually he said carom. I would have done the combo in spite of the angle on the 1 since I'm more comfortable doing it that way. 1-7 combo, drift 1 and cue to side rail, then 1-9 combo. The short rail bank on the 9 is lower percentage for me personally.

The ghost is very much a breaking drill. From the looks of that layout you either had a bad rack or didn't hit them very well.

If 30% are unrunnable might I suggest you should put some time into the break?

One possible solution. If you don't like off-angle combos, you could play the 1-7 straight on, let the 1 drift over, then play a combo or carom from there.
