Hiring an Instructor? What to ask for?

I've never hired an instructor but I am thinking about it after reading the other threads on instruction...

But it seems there is so much to learn and work on.

So what is the first step in hiring an instructor?

1. Let them watch you hit a few shots or play a game, then let them advise you on what you need to work on and what lessons are needed? (Sort of like a dentists "treatment plan"...)

2. Ask for a lesson on a specific thing like fundamentals, bank shots, position, etc.

Then what are the next steps in instruction?

1. Work on a different thing each visit? (Bank shots, position, carom shots, etc.)

2. Continue to work on the first lesson you had.

Don't know what's first but this is as good as it gets. When you are down over a ball, don't stand up until you have "WATCHED" the ball go in the pocket. Then get up. Ever notice how many people jump straight up when they think they missed a ball? That's probably why they missed the ball. Yes, it is a little more work but do you want to improve or not? Expect the ball to go in the pocket and watch it go in.

Instruction

First you need to sit down with your instructor and figure out where you are at and set some goals. I do this with a video analysis. We shoot the video, Go to the table and learn proper fundamental mechanics. Stance, Grip, Bridge, and Stroke. Then we have a good look at your video and you critique yourself. For specific problem areas, there are plenty of good drills. This is an excellant begining.
