Article is from 1887, it mentions a new game called Continuous pool, which is the father of 14.1. In this game you play out all 15 balls, re-rack and you get the opening break. It also mentions that they will start up some tournaments using these rules
. It appears that prior to Continuous pool, they only played until someone managed to score 8 points, which I guess replaced 61 pool for a short period of time.
