Hitting 8 ball first in a combination shot??

One of the leagues I play in has a rule that if it is open table you can hit the 8 ball first to make a combination. This makes no sense to me as the 8 ball is never an "object ball" until you are are shooting at it to win the game. Is there another league that has this rule?

not to the best of my knowledge and i shoot apa, bca, an in house cash league and i have shot in tap.

I have seen this rule apply only as a means to safety shot, to prevent the opponent an easy out. Table remains open after the shot.
But also know the league operators have their rules, such as bar rules, not using ball in hand, etc.

Hmmmm?

That is as I suspected. Anyone else heard that you can hit 8 ball first if open table?

Eight ball first on an open table is legal in VNEA rules, however it is a foul in BCA and APA rules

there ya go. one of pool's great challanges / frustrations. why can't we all just pick one set of rules:grin:

As Jeff said, this rule applies to VNEA. Tell you the truth, I like it, it gives the player even more options on an open table.

It did come as a suprise the first time an opponent played a shot like that on me.

I don't think it comes up often enough to make a big difference anyways and I do think it goes a long way to combat that "bar rules" idea that the 8 ball is sacred and shouldn't even be breathed on.

More years ago now than I care to remember, it was a standard rule, at least in the bars I played in. When I took up the game seriously many years later, I think it still was. I don't remember when it changed, because where I learned to play, nobody and I mean nobody, played 8 ball, except in the bars.

OK Valley then. Someone last night told me it was a BCA rule.

I still think it is BS as the 8 ball is never an object ball until you are shooting at it.

Several years ago under BCA rules this was allowed. I think in 2005 the BCA changed the rule and it is no longer allowed.
