Hollywood Billiards and TIGHT Pockets

They still have tables upstairs with big pockets. Customers even get a choice when they get there whether they want to play on tables with tight pockets or not. What's the problem?

Is that the case? Someone lead us to believe they were converting the entire room to 4" pockets. If they're leaving the balcony as-is then we've all done a nice little mental exercise.

Jude, tight pockets repell pool players. Non pool players don't notice them, and they know nothing about equipment specs. When a non pool player can't make a ball in 20 minutes they call it an "off" day, they don't blame it on the equipment. If you are saying that the non-pool playing public are disenchanted by tight pockets, you are very wrong. All they care about is A.Liquor, B.Environment and C.Location. Once again, it is the people who take the game seriously who would rather play somewhere else with easier equipment. I worked at a poolhall with tight pockets for years, this is not my opinion, it is a fact based on what I have seen and been told.

I think your right about tight pockets repelling pool players. Since our pool hall tightened the pockets about two years ago, regular players started drifting away. Some actually just quit playing. The Friday and Saturday night crowd seems to remain the same though.

Many times I find that the pool rooms owned or managed by "A+" and higher players generally limit shimming to only a few select tables. I do not know why but I've played at quite a few pool halls around the country and this seems to hold up.
