How are cue tips made?

Is here a website or any lit. that anyone can point me to regarding types of leather and different processes? It has always been of interest to me, and would love to take a crack at it someday.

I swear I know one guy who makes all his own tips from shoe soles. Exactly how I dont know. He plays good and there doesnt seem to be anything different about his tips.
